13 Celebrity Co-Star Couples You Didn't Know Dated
You'd have to be an expert in pop culture history to know these couples were once together.
Long before the days of going “Instagram-official,” celebrity couples still existed. Although it seems we get an inside scoop of every celebrity relationship these days due to social media posts, plenty of unheard-of flings happened between movie and TV show co-stars back in the day. From Ted Danson and Whoopi Goldberg’s brief romance after starring in Made in America in 1992, to Bradley Cooper and Renée Zellweger’s 2009 on and off-screen romance after Case 39, L’OFFICIEL looks at several of Hollywood’s co-star couples that you might never know dated.
Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd
These two first met in 1998 on the set of The Object of My Affection and continued their on-screen romance in real life afterwards. It appears that it ended amicably, as Aniston and Rudd have been in several movies and TV shows together since then, including Rudd’s reoccurring role on Friends as Mike, who dated Phoebe Buffay.
Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock
Meeting on the set of A Time to Kill in 1996, McConaughey and Bullock dated for two years. We’d like to believe they’re on friendly terms, considering Bullock’s interview with Cosmopolitan in 2003. “No matter where he is in his life or where I am in mine—he could be married—I know we would stay close,” she said.
Amy Poehler and John Stamos
Okay—these two may not have been an official couple, but they did go on a date in 2014 after Poehler split with ex-husband Will Arnett. Apparently, Stamos asked her out for dinner, but Poehler didn’t know it was a date—regardless, the They Came Together co-stars seem better off as friends.
Ted Danson and Whoopi Goldberg
After costarring in Made in America together in 1992, these acting legends began a romantic endeavor, even though Danson was still married to his second wife, Casey Coates. For obvious reasons, this fling ended in a messy split, in addition to a divorce between Danson and Coates, just the year after.
Lily Collins and Taylor Lautner
Long before she met fiancé Charlie McDowell, Collins briefly dated the then-Twilight star. They grew close on the set of Abduction in 2010, but split one week before the film premiered.
Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson
After working together on the 2012 film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Hudgens and Hutcherson were briefly linked romantically, but it seems Hudgens was the one to call it quits. “She broke my heart,” Hutcherson joked on the Australian version of the Today show later that year. "I’m just kidding. That was a while ago, we’re just really good friends now.”
Sarah Paulson and Cherry Jones
Co-stars Paulson and Jones have a long history—including a couple of films together and a seven-year relationship. Before calling it quits in 2009, they were in the 2005 film Swimmers together, and it appears they left on good terms, as they worked together again in the 2011 film New Year’s Eve.
Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal
Portman and Gyllenhaal were first linked in 2002 and had a brief relationship after being spotted on a date in 2006. Regardless of why they split, they maintained a great friendship after and even starred in the 2009 film Brothers together.
Bradley Cooper and Renee Zellweger
Perhaps one of the more shocking Hollywood romances we’ve ever heard of, Cooper and Zellweger dated for two years after meeting on the set of Case 39 in 2006. Although they didn’t start dating until a few years after in 2009, they broke up in 2011, apparently due to Cooper’s work commitments.
Minka Kelly and Donald Faison
The Friday Night Lights actress and Clueless actor dated in 2005 after his divorce from ex-wife Lisa Askey. Despite working on the Stand Up to Cancer film with a number of other big-name celebrities, they split up after two years together. But Kelly didn’t waste any time, later dating Derek Jeter on-and-off for a few years.
Johnny Depp and Juliette Lewis
Meeting on the set of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? in 1993 following Lewis’ split with Brad Pitt, these two were actually engaged but went their separate ways before tying the knot. Like many other Hollywood couples, they’ve crossed paths again, and were reunited as friends at the 2016 Art of Elysium Heaven Gala in LA.
Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele
Calling all Gleeks! Although portraying a teacher-student relationship on the TV show Glee, these two did date back in the day after crossing paths in different Broadway shows, according to her 2014 book, Brunette Ambition. Although it’s unclear when exactly they dated, it was prior to Glee, which first aired in 2009, so they were able to start on friendly terms.
Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves
