If you watched Dune last week and walked away desperate for a sequel, you're in luck. The film's star Timothée Chalamet just announced in a new Instagram post that Dune: Part Two is in the works.

Dune follows the plot outlined in the first half of Frank Hebert's lengthy 1965 novel of the same name. Dune: Part Two will tackle the second half of the book, picking up as Chalamet's character Paul partners with Chani (Zendaya) and the other Fremen in a mission to save their planet Arrakis.

“I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two,” said director Denis Villeneuve. “It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune, and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.”

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and Legendary have greenlit the project for an October 2023 release. While we expect main cast members like Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, and Javier Bardem to reprise their roles for the sequel (though no casting decisions have been confirmed), Villeneuve will also return in his capacity to lead the project. However, unlike the first film, the sequel will be released exclusively in theaters and not on HBO Max.

Denis Villeneuve has crafted a film that is both visually extraordinary and emotionally transporting, as evidenced by its global success both critically and at the box office,” said Toby Emmerich, the Chairman of Warner Bros. Picture Group. “We are thrilled to continue on this journey with Denis and his cast and crew, and our partners at Legendary, and can’t wait to bring the next chapter of this epic tale to theaters in October 2023.”

“Legendary is pleased to officially move forward with Dune: Part Two … once again based on the amazing books written by Frank Herbert,” said Legendary in an official statement. “We would not have gotten to this point without the extraordinary vision of Denis and the amazing work of his talented crew, the writers, our stellar cast, our partners at Warner Bros., and of course the fans! Here’s to more Dune.”
