Sotheby's to Auction Karl Lagerfeld's Art, Gloves, Cat Dishes, and More
From Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons to Rolls Royces and Lagerfeld's beloved cat's food dishes, Sotheby's reveals the extensive estate to be auctioned in Paris, Monaco, and Cologne later this year.
Sotheby's has announced a three-part Karl Lagerfeld estate auction including artworks by Takashi Murakami, Jeff Koons, over 200 hundred pairs of fingerless gloves, and silver cat dishes once belonging to the partial heir of the $300 million estate: a Birman cat named Choupette.
Sale highlights include the late designer's Rolls Royces, Goyard luggage, suits from Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Comme des Garçons, and furniture from Gino Sarfati, Ron Arad, and Martin Szekely. Prices range from $235–$70,000.
The curators of the auction have highlighted the varied assortment of goods which range from silver hand weights to alligator bags and iPhone cases to the polished aluminium zenith chair by storied designer Marc Newsom, predicted to sell for $47,000–$70,000.
After initial speculation, Sotheby's confirmed to The Guardian that “the dishes of Choupette —the cat who shared the last eight years of the designer’s life" will be available for bidding. Don't fear, though the cat may be losing its plate, she personally earned more than $3.18 million from a German car commercial and Japanese beauty campaign.
The auctions are slated to begin in Monaco from December 3-5, before heading to Paris on December 14-15, and in Cologne in the spring, though these dates remain unannounced.
Lagerfeld, who died in 2019, was 85 at the time of his death. After joining Chanel in 1983, Lagerfeld remained the creative director until the time of his death. Throughout his career, he also held positions at Chloe, Fendi, and his eponymous line Karl Lagerfeld.
