Celebrity Makeup Artist Priscilla Ono on How She's Preparing For the 2023 Super Bowl

We’re all tuning into this year’s Super Bowl. Sure, some might be doing so for the sports, but for the athletically averse, this is a historic Rihanna concert bookended by a game of football. It’s been almost four years since her last performance—and we’re more interested in the singer than ever. We caught a few glimpses of our favorite billionaire during the hiatus but can confirm that she appeared fabulous as always. Behind Rihanna’s flawless beauty looks is none other than celebrity makeup artist, Priscilla Ono.

Ono, a Los Angeles native, has been the Global Makeup Artist for Fenty Beauty since 2017. Throughout her time at the brand, she has helped Fenty Beauty launch worldwide while remaining involved in product development and some pretty iconic campaign shoots. Ono’s passion for beauty dates back to the ‘90s, which eventually led her to work with the likes of Bella Hadid, Paris Hilton, and Megan Thee Stallion, just to name a few. 

When it comes to beauty, it’s safe to say that Ono knows what she’s talking about. With Rihanna’s halftime performance just around the corner, L’OFFICIEL interviewed the makeup artist on how she prepares for the biggest event of the season.

L’OFFICIEL: The Super Bowl halftime show is a massive production. Without giving too much away, what's the strategy when coming up with Rihanna's look? Are you collaborating with stylists, set designers, etc.?

PRISCILLA ONO: Yes definitely, it’s always a collaborative project. Collaboration is a full team effort with everyone from stylists, hairstylists, and Rihanna herself. Rihanna is always really involved in her looks and we’re definitely prepping weeks in advance for everything to come to life.

L’O: The stadium for the show holds 63,400 people. How will you ensure that makeup looks stand out in such a large venue? 

PO: I think that we definitely always give it 120 percent. I try not to think about how many people are there. I go into it like it’s another day in the office. Not trying to overthink things. For me, it’s all about prep. I'll do facials beforehand. I prep my client's skin really well, so I know their skin is ready to go on the big day and looks flawless to stand out.

L’O: Stress sweat is a real thing, especially during an important event. Given your partnership with Secret Deodorant, how do you plan to stay fresh and relaxed throughout the big day?

PO: I’m definitely packing my Secret Weightless Dry Spray in my set bag, personal luggage... everywhere! I really need it because it gives me 48 hours of sweat and odor protection, meaning I’m protected all day, which I need! My current favorite scent is White Peach, but I have been experimenting with their new scents like Tropical Hibiscus, Midnight Jasmine, and Cucumber.

L’O: It’s one thing to execute a makeup look, but getting it to stay put is a whole other story. Whether it be for a halftime show, a night out, or a long day of work, what are your product recommendations for long-lasting wear?

PO: My product recommendations for long-lasting wear are a good primer and setting spray. Both depend on a person’s skin type—more matte if you're oily and moisturizing if you have dry skin. This is a key component in your makeup routine!
