While you may be used to thinking of the summer sun as harsh on your hair, winter can be just as damaging.

While the cold temperatures and windy weather may not immediately seem like a hazard for your hair, winter can actually be quite drying and damaging to your locks. Jean-Philippe Beaupied, the founder of the <a href="https://www.premier-studio.be/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Premier Studio</a> salon in Brussels, explains that "low temperatures which dehydrate hair&mdash;and skin too&mdash;scarves tangling strands, the friction of hats, and drying wind" are all concerns for your hair in winter. However, the hairstylist spoke to L'OFFICIEL about some tips to protect your hair this winter.

Nourish, Hydrate, Heal

Start with a shampoo full of keratin and apply to the entire length of the hair. This formula is life-saving for hair fibers. While you may be used to leave-in conditioners, try leaving your shampoo in for at least 10 minutes to give your tresses time to absorb the nutrients in your shampoo. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb if possible. Follow with a leave-in conditioner and style as preferred without heat. Once a week, Beaupied also recommends a deep conditioner to keep your ends nourished.

Between Treatments

Try self-massaging the scalp between washes to oxygenate the skin and roots of the hair to support relaxation and regrowth. Fans of oil masks should aim for <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/beauty/benefits-of-essential-oils-for-hair" target="_blank" rel="noopener">coconut oil</a>, which is the most moisturizing, best absorbed by the hair fiber, and not suffocating on the hair follicle.

"The watchword this winter is shine anyway, from the jawline to the shoulders," says Beaupied. Sometimes you have to lose to gain, and in this case, it's about length. By cutting the ends, you stop split ends in their tracks and preserve the healthy hair you have.
