Dior Men's Spring/Summer 2023 Show Was a Gardener's Dream

Kim Jones’ Dior Spring/Summer 2023 menswear collection is every gardener’s dream. Jones pays tribute to Christian Dior's passion for nature by reimagining the designer's childhood home in Granville, Normandy as the show's setting. Amidst a myriad of colorful flowers, a vibrant blue backdrop of sky and sea is a field of grass that models almost seem to gallop through. They emerge through a quaint cottage and enter a space where creativity and imagination can truly run free. 

As soft warm light reflects across the show space, the models appear in garments dominated by pastel colors, seamlessly blending into their natural surroundings. There is a nod to the functionality of outdoor clothing, from tech-reflective gilets to practical backpacks to belt bags, all designed with a clear emphasis on practicality. Many of the models sport a gardener’s hat, designed by Stephen Jones Millinery, some of which were made using a 3D printer. 

Perhaps the most distinct contrast to this intended functionality is Jones’ choice to celebrate Bloomsbury set painter Duncan Grant. As a post-impressionist painter, vivid colors, thick distinct brush strokes and an emphasis on geometric, distorted forms were all features that could be found in his work. Inspired by this, Jones placed some elements of his work on fleece sweaters and embroidered them on sheer tops for a playful effect.

There is no hesitation that Kim Jones’ appreciation for art is equivalent to his dedication to fashion. As a House, Dior never ceases to innovate and recontextualize its past, bringing forward a collection of menswear that’s functional and so loveable.

With Japanese actor Ryusei Yokohama in attendance as well as David Beckham, his son Cruz Beckham, and Justin Timberlake, there were many celebrity favorites taking in the pastoral atmosphere from the front row. They watched as the unique details of every garment, the stitching, tailoring, and accessorizing all aptly reflected their surroundings.
