Fendi Fall 2020: The Modern Femme Fatale Carries an AirPods Case
It seems like Fendi and Prada were on the same page this season. Don't get us wrong—the collections stand out from one another with their own sets of strong motifs—but a nuanced power in femininity was a clear theme on the second day of Milan Fashion Week. Fendi Fall 2020 marked Silvia Venturini Fendi's second collection at the helm of the house's womenswear since Karl Lagerfeld passed away last year, and it proved that she's truly made the line her own, providing a luxurious follow-up to her sunny Spring 2020 show.
This season, Venturini Fendi was looking to communicate an air of "soft power," thinking about the ways femininity translates from the boudoir to the bedroom and everything in between. The result was a collection for today's society lady, complete with a tech collaboration with Chaos—yes, a Fendi AirPods Pro case is coming your way, among many other high-end tech accessories. But don't think the show's modern-day energy rode on hype alone—strong-shouldered silhouettes dominated the collection, on everything from crafted leather ensembles to luxurious furs to sweaters in shades of baby pink and sunny yellow. There was something nostalgic about the looks, as timeless prints and delicate materials took center stage, but unprecedented juxtapositions of tough and dainty aesthetics made it undeniable that these ensembles are made for a woman in 2020.
Adding to the modern feeling of the collection, Fendi highlighted size inclusivity by casting Paloma Elsesser, who walked in a double-breasted, pale yellow coat paired with simple accessories, as well as Jill Kortleve, who furthered the sophisticated and forward-thinking mood in a fitted LBD. Elsesser and Kortleve have found success at brands like Eckhaus Latta, Prabal Gurung, and Alexander McQueen, and their inclusion at Fendi was a reminder that representing a range of body types is far more than a trend. Here's hoping this shift continues across the industry, as it only strengthened Venturini Fendi's vision of feminine power.
The show, which Vittoria Ceretti opened and Kaia Gerber closed, overall celebrated the ability for a woman to embrace all aspects of her personality—to say she can't be both strong and delicate, or that she can't balance a taste for classic sophistication with a desire to flaunt the latest in fashion tech, would be entirely dated. And while we're sure to see plenty of hype over the Chaos collaboration when it hits the market, the clothing was just as strong as the accessories, proving Fendi's new era is an exciting one indeed.
