Miu Miu's Fall/Winter 2024 Collection Revalues Girlishness
Miu Miu's Fall/Winter 2024 experiments with girlishness without an age restraint.
For Miu Miu’s Fall/Winter 2024 show, almost every fashion It Girl was either sitting front row or walking the runway. Guests included Sydney Sweeney, Lorde, Paloma Elsesser, Emma Corrin, and Camille Rowe to name a few. Within the collection, Miuccia Prada explores the range and restrictions of clothing in childhood to adulthood by breaking age barriers and experimenting with garments that exude playfulness. The fashion house continues to be at the helm of some of the most prevalent carefree trends diverting uniform attire, expanding our ideas of girlhood basic staples altogether.
Prada emphasized and recontextualized industrious, and professional workwear by exaggerating and inflating accessories such as large bags being carried and tucked under arms as if they were mini-clutches, to models wearing extra-large leather work gloves. The show included everything from trench coats, and slacks, in a range of colors, with a singular pearl necklace worn to soften the professional workwear. There were even straight babydoll dresses, paired with loafers, and knit tights, some bold in blue or green for a pop of color while showing the tight waistline in between cropped garment sets. A classic button-down shirt also made its way down the runway, either as a dress itself, or tucked into large midi-skirts with combat boots. By the end of the collection, the clothing transitions from off-kilter uniform basics into wrinkled slip dresses, and it closes off with multiple little black dresses, which seem to be a modern-day nod to Audrey Hepburn’s dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and the models wore oversized, blacked out sunglasses to match.
“Girlishness is a word we can revalue, from a pejorative gendered noun, anchored to age, to a universal idiom expressive of the strength of rebellion, a spirit of freedom and individuality, one attribute of a richer whole,” says Prada in a statement. Through pairing unexpected articles together like a full faux fur coat skirt set accessorized with leather slide-on slippers (worn by Amelia Gray) or mixing and matching intrinsic workwear basics with puffy winter outerwear; the collection revalues girlishness by embracing it as both a softness, and toughness, that is a demeanor that can be accessible regardless of age.
