Sterling Ruby Channels a DIY Spirit in Debut Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture Collection

In his debut couture collection, the artist shines a dark light on Americana.

Multidisciplinary artist Sterling Ruby works on several fronts: ceramics, painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, video and textiles. He arrived in fashion from fabrics, debuting his label S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. at Pitti Uomo in 2019 in a collaboration with his wife, photographer Melanie Schiff. Now, Ruby has taken a bold next step, taking his designs to the Haute Couture runways.

The collection has a spirit of DIY—perhaps to highlight the handmade nature of couture—expemplified in the loose threads, splattered paint, and punk pin-pierced shoes seen throughout the looks. Voluminous, shaggy wool coats and bags more closely resembling musical instrument cases punctuate the collection, which is topped off by a looming feeling expressed in austere oversized hoods for a decidedly American take on the French tradition.
