The Met's Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition will be dedicated to John Galliano, the British fashion designer.

On Friday, The Met announced the Spring 2027 Costume Institute Exhibition, John Galliano: Horizons. The retrospective show is the first major museum exhibition to delve into Galliano's entire creative history, from his 1984 graduation collection at Central Saint Martins in London, through his appointments at Givenchy and Christian Dior in Paris, to his critically acclaimed Spring/Summer 2024 collection for Maison Margiela.&nbsp;
"His work brings historical inquiry, artistic imagination, theatrical expression, and technical experimentation into dynamic relation," said Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and CEO, in the museum's official announcement.
Galliano, 65, is only the third living designer to be honored with an exhibition by The Met's Costume Institute, after Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017.&nbsp; Drawing extensively from The Costume Institute’s collections of Galliano’s work, the exhibition features select garments and accessories he has designed, his sketches, toiles, research books, and archival materials. John Galliano: Horizons will uncover how Galliano brings places, histories, artistic traditions, narratives, and identities together—transforming them into the avant-garde and visionary designs he is best known for.&nbsp;

Stars like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Zendaya, Gisele Bündchen, and Nicole Kidman are just some of the celebrities who have been lucky enough to wear Galliano's coveted designs over the years.&nbsp;

For his contributions to fashion, Galliano was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/pop%20culture/celebrities-with-british-royal-titles">named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire</a> in 2001 and a Royal Designer for Industry in 2002. He was also named British Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards on four separate occasions. 
"John Galliano: Horizons will offer an expansive examination of his creative practice while attending closely to the historical, cultural, and ethical circumstances through which his work is understood,” Hollein continued. &nbsp;
The Met will not shy away from grappling with Galliano's derogatory antisemitic and racist rant, documented in a Paris bar in 2011. "In doing so, the exhibition will consider how artistic achievement should be understood alongside ethical accountability," The Met's announcement states.&nbsp;
Galliano's actions caused an uproar in public opinion, resulting in a long trial and a fine of €6,000 (equivalent to $8,500) by the Paris courts, and a rupture in his professional career—the designer was dismissed as Creative Director for Dior and left his eponymous fashion label. After his controversial outburst and subsequent rehabilitation from addiction, Galliano received a second chance in the fashion world, first with a temporary residency at Oscar De La Renta in 2013, and later joining Maison Margiela in 2014.&nbsp;
At Maison Margiela, Galliano held a ten-year tenure as Creative Director, and following his departure from the fashion house in 2024, Galliano stepped out of the fashion spotlight. Returning to the industry this year, Galliano announced a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/john-galliano-zara-partnership-collections-designs">two-year creative partnership</a> with Zara in March to "re-author" the brand's archives, his first collaboration since leaving Maison Margiela. Galliano's seasonal collections for Zara are set to debut beginning in September 2026, with a special launch event scheduled for September 30 during Paris Fashion Week.&nbsp;

The Met's Galliano exhibition&nbsp;will be organized by three "movements," titled: "Bearings,” “Horizons,” and “Atlas of Transformation.”
Opening with "Bearings," the exhibition provides a chronology connecting Galliano’s career and collections to broader historical and cultural events. "Horizons" will look towards Galliano's sources of inspiration, such as history, geography, art, storytelling, and performance, as a foundation for his imaginative designs. Finally, "Atlas of Transformation" will explore the designer's craftsmanship and innovation, charting Galliano's creative process from initial sketches and fittings to the finished product.&nbsp;

"Horizons approaches fashion as a form of cartography, mapping not territories but affinities, tensions, and transformations," said Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute.&nbsp;"It traces how images become ideas, ideas become material, and material becomes emotion. Yet a horizon reveals not only what lies before us, but also where we stand."

John Galliano: Horizons will be on view at The Met Fifth Avenue from May 9, 2027, through Jan. 9, 2028.&nbsp;
