Red Carpet Looks From the 2024 Cannes Film Festival Delivered Timeless French Elegance
See how all of our favorite stars dazzled on the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival red carpet.
On the red carpet of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, one of the premiere entertainment events of the year, each and every celebrity arrived in style.
Ahead of the red carpet, members of the festival's jury went coastal chic for the photocall. Greta Gerwig, the Jury president, appeared in head-to-toe Maison Margiela—the Barbie director wore a blue-and-white pinstriped sundress with striking white Tabi platform heels from Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela. Gerwig's appointment as the Jury president marks an especially historic occasion, as she is the first female American director to serve in the role. Other members of the fashion-forward jury include Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Nadine Labaki, Juan Antonio Bayona, Pierfrancesco Favino, Hirokazu Kore-eda, and Omar Sy. Gladstone embraced the seaside energy of the French Riviera and went for a cool girl's take on coastal fashion with a crisp white button-down shirt dress by Gucci, the brand's emblematic burgundy leather belt—complete with the GG monogram, of course—and matching slingback platform loafers with the signature horsebit detailing.
On the first night of Cannes, all eyes will of course be on the red carpets again, but at the festival's opening ceremony, Meryl Streep is the guest of honor—although, isn't she always? The actress will be awarded an honorary Palme d'Or, one of the highest modes of distinction from the festival. Streep has only attended the Cannes Film Festival once previously, when she won the Best Actress award for her performance in Evil Angels 35 years ago. “I am immeasurably honored to receive the news of this prestigious award. To win a prize at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of filmmaking," Streep said in a statement after the news was initially announced. "To stand in the shadow of those who have previously been honored is humbling and thrilling in equal part. I so look forward to coming to France to thank everyone in person this May!”
Ahead of her red carpet appearance, Streep arrived to Cannes sporting an all-white ensemble, complete with oversized cat-eye Prada sunglasses, silver hoop earrings, and a classic French Riviera-style sun hat—a look that she emulated later on in an elegant white gown exhibited ahead of the opening ceremony.
As the evening progressed, stars like Jane Fonda, Léa Seydoux, Emmanuelle Beart, and Juliette Binoche, among others, strode onto the red carpet, revealing a series of stunning gowns. While many of our favorite stars dazzled in bejeweled and sequined numbers, others shimmered with the help of their jewelry. In keeping with the classic French elegance ingrained in the event, fashion-forward celebrities like Taylor Hill, Romee Strijd, and Virginie Ledoyen graced the red carpet adorned with sensational Messika jewelry pieces.
As the film festival progressed, we were introduced to more jaw-dropping looks. Bella Hadid, for example, stunned in a sheer look from Saint Laurent's Fall/Winter 2024 collection. The model was just one among others who donned a see-through look, though, as supermodel Naomi Campbell and actress Elle Fanning also modeled body-bearing looks for us this year at Cannes. Campbell was seen on the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Red Carpet wearing vintage Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld from the Fall/Winter 1996 collection. The dress was modeled by Campbell herself back in 1996, when the collection first debuted, making the look both alluring on the carpet and sentimental to fashion fans. Fanning decided to channel the '70s in a delicate floral Gucci gown with a plunging neckline.
“Cannes is the ultimate playground for fashion, and you can go all out,” Fanning said to People about the look.
Along with Fanning's retro semi-sheer look, others were also stunned during the closing ceremony, including Simone Ashley, who demonstrated the timelessness of a little black dress. The dress from Stella McCartney featured a structured bodice with elegant ruffled detailing and a brilliant train that flowed along the back of the garment.
Jury President Greta Gerwig didn't disappoint either in a beautiful black gown from Celine.
“We really led with our hearts for everything we watched,” said Gerwig, 2024 Cannes Film Festival Jury President, during the closing ceremony.
