The actress' gown at the 36th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards celebrated Catherine the Great's love for pearls.

Though she attended the 36th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards from home, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/elle-fanning-debuts-on-the-runway" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elle Fanning</a> brought her fashion A-game in a custom <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/vivienne-westwood-fall-winter-2021-french-rococo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vivienne Westwood</a> gown inspired by her character in The Great. The shimmering lavender gown featured a waist-cinching bodice with a bunched bodycon skirt that fell to her half-calf. Inspired by her character, Russian Empress Catherine the Great, the garment also included loose strands hanging as off-the-shoulder straps.
On Instagram, she explained the motivation behind the design, writing, "For the Independent Spirit Awards, Vivienne and [Andreas Kronthaler] reached out about designing a dress inspired by Catherine the Great&rsquo;s love of pearls! And we all know no one does a <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/how-to-style-corsets-y2k-jean-paul-gaultier-vivienne-westwood" target="_blank" rel="noopener">corset</a> like Westwood!! Love you both."

Arriving to the virtual red carpet, Fanning was nominated for Best Female Performance in a New Scripted Series, however, the award went to <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/shira-haas-unorthodox-interview" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shira Haas</a> for her role in the Netflix show Unorthodox. Throughout the award show season, her royal performance in the Hulu comedy series has been <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/2021-golden-globe-award-nominees-film-tv-shows-netflix" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nominated</a> for both a <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/best-dressed-celebs-at-the-2021-golden-globe-awards" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Golden Globe</a> and a SAG Award and won her a Satellite Award.
