Hubert de Givenchy Has Died at 91
Famed fashion designer, couturier, and image-maker, Hubert de Givenchy has died, his longtime partner Philippe Venet said in a statement to AFP. The news comes nearly three weeks after Givenchy celebrated his 91st birthday on February 21.
After opening the house of Givenchy in 1952, his ladylike gowns and ensembles became the epitome of sophisticated chic, which would then garner the positive critical reception of the media and consumers. However, Givenchy would truly dominate the world of 1950s and '60s fashion thanks to Hollywood.
Several of Givenchy's most loyal clients were Golden Hollywood-era actresses such as Grace Kelly, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, and most notably, Audrey Hepburn; Givenchy designed several costumes for her most iconic films including Sabrina, Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany's and more. Of course, his impact didn't stop there. He would eventually dress First Lady Jackie Kennedy, the Duchess of Windsor, and supermodel Jerry Hall. Several of his most iconic designs include the balloon coat and his own versions of both the babydoll and little black dress.
