Ladylike Silhouettes and Dark Hues are Taking Over Your Spring Wardrobe

Black is back, with an ultra-feminine twist.

In fashion, black has long telegraphed elegance, power, and independence. And, although not exactly what we expected from the season of lively prints and joyful colors, the Spring/Summer 2024 runways reinvented the bewitching absence of light with a ladylike aesthetic. Calling back to elegant, structured '50s silhouettes and the femmes fatales of film noir—all of whom had wardrobes to die for—these rigid shapes replace the sheer, flowy dresses and playful miniskirts we were expecting to see in the upcoming months. Instead, chic blazers and tube skirts seem to be our new spring allies. Say goodbye to the Mermaidcore, Tomato Girl, and Coquettecore aesthetics. This spring is all about discreet sophistication, dark shades, and subtle femininity.

Rather than providing easy interpretations of the pervasive “quiet luxury” aesthetic, houses including Saint Laurent, Chanel, Alaïa, Givenchy, Prada (with a show set to the Vertigo soundtrack), and Dior looked to the past. Coats, dresses, blazers, and separates are nipped tightly at the waist, a perfect blend between the wasp-waist silhouette and the slim-fitting pencil skirt look popular in the '50s, highly influenced by Christian Dior's iconic New Look. Soft, feminine draping and sharp cuts provide stark contrast in the color of night.

Although probably not the most practical look to be out and about on a hot summer day, these pieces guantee endless use and timeless chicness. To mix & match all year long, this modest trend highlights the power behind investing in high-quality, cohesive pieces that will live in your wardrobe forever and offer endless styling possibilities.
