Margot Robbie to Produce New 'Sims'-Inspired Film
After Barbie with Margot Robbie and the upcoming announcement of Polly Pocket with Lily Collins, another game from our childhood will be the subject of a film adaptation.
It's official, the games of our childhood are on the rise! After successfully bringing Barbie to the big screen, Margot Robbie is now turning her attention to adapting one of the most popular video games of all time, The Sims, as a producer. The Sims, for anyone who does not know, is a video game released for the first time in 2000 and one of the biggest successes of this millennium. LuckyChap, the production company that the actress leads in partnership with her husband, Tom Ackerly, as well as Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, will team up with Vertigo Entertainment and Electronic Arts, who published the original game to create the film version, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Considering Barbie's enormous success, gorgeous sets, fun wardrobe, and heartfelt moments, one can only have high hopes for a Margot Robbie-produced version of The Sims. Director Kate Herron, known for helming the first season of the Marvel series Loki, is set to take the reins of the project. The new script for The Sims was co-written with Briony Redman, with whom Herron has collaborated on several successful past projects.
The Sims, developed by Will Wright after the success of his city-building simulation game SimCity, has often been described as a digital dollhouse in which players can build houses to their liking, but also control the appearance, daily life, and activities of the inhabitants of these houses. Many have noted that The Sims bears a notable similarity to Barbie , in that there is no storyline or narrative inherent to the original game. However, the proof is in the pudding:cwith the right creative team, Barbie was transformed into a billion-dollar blockbuster, winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
The Sims itself is a blockbuster in its own right, spawning three sequels, as well as countless expansions and DLC offerings. Although the development of a film adaptation began in 2007, it never came to fruition. In 2019, it was reported that plans for the adaptation were canceled by Disney, after acquiring 21st Century Fox. There's no word yet on when fans can expect to see the Margot Robbie-produced The Sims movie on the big screen, but we'll wait with baited breath.
