Everything We Know About the 2023 Met Gala
Karl Lagerfeld will be the face of the 2023 Met Gala, as the event pays tribute to his legacy in the fashion world.
This year, the first Monday in May falls on May 1, and we couldn't be more excited. Held annually to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, the 2023 Met Gala theme pays tribute to none other than Karl Lagerfeld. The highly anticipated star-studded event will include an evening of glitz, glamor, art, and fashion, all while honoring the legacy of the late designer.
Theme
Titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, the 2023 Met Costume Institute exhibit will display 150 of his original looks from his time at Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel alongside their original sketches. The exhibit will be on display from May 5 to July 16, 2023 inside the Met’s Tisch Galleries.
“He would sketch everything. He would always say that he could draw before he could talk or walk. In many ways it was his primary form of communication, whether he was delivering them by fax machine or iPhone," stated designer Andrew Bolton on Vogue's Instagram, "So at its heart, the exhibition will look at the evolution of Karl’s two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments... It was almost a secret code, a language shared between him and those premiers, that only they could fully decipher."
Hosts
The chief sponsor of the exhibit will be Chanel, which will be supported by Fendi, Condé Nast, and Lagerfeld’s own fashion brand. On January 18, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute announced that Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, and Anna Wintour will serve as this year's Met Gala co-chairs and hosts.
Guests
This year, it seems that those who aren't invited are more of interest than those who are. Although specifics have yet to be confirmed, we know that Wintour is cracking down on this year’s guest list. Who won’t be returning? A source at Page Six claimed that the Kardashians won't be making the cut this year, although an insider from the KarJen clan told the publication that the rumor is untrue. While the reality-famous family has garnered significant attention at the ball before, it wasn’t all that long ago that they were unwanted at the event. Perhaps Wintour had a change of heart?
