Once considered a styling mistake, wearing both metals at once is now one of jewelry’s most popular choices.

Gold or silver? Increasingly, the answer is neither—or rather, both. What used to be a styling faux pas, mixing your metals, has become one of the more popular ways to accessorize.
The no-mixing rule wasn’t arbitrary, as it came from the idea that gold and silver “compete” for attention, and that clashing metals could throw off an otherwise put-together outfit. But that logic assumed people were choosing metals based on popularity and aesthetics, not on what actually works with their skin.
Skin undertone has traditionally guided which metal looks best on someone. Cooler undertones, especially those with pink or red hints, tend to look best in white metals like silver, white gold, and platinum, since these tones balance out redness. Warm yellow gold, on the other hand, can sometimes make flushed or rosy skin look even more pronounced.
Meanwhile, olive undertones carry a mix of green, gold, and neutral pigments, which makes it feel more flexible for jewelry, but warm metals are usually the most flattering. Yellow gold plays well with olive’s natural warmth, and rose gold softens the look without tipping the skin towards looking sallow. Even so, brighter or antique silvers can still work depending on the tones involved, which is part of why olive undertones are often described as an adaptable feature.&nbsp;
But plenty of people don’t fall cleanly into “gold person” or “silver person,” so mixed metal jewelry is a natural fit here, since the piece itself blends both tones.
Plus, there’s practicality behind it—for everyone, regardless of undertone—since a single mixed metal piece lets you wear gold and silver at the same time, meaning it pairs easily with whatever else you’re wearing, no matter the metal. That matters more than it might seem, since plenty of jewelry only comes in one finish. If a design you love only exists in silver, or only in gold, it can be hard to work into a collection that leans the other way. Mixed metal pieces sidestep that problem entirely, giving people more freedom to shop for what they actually like instead of what “matches.” Single gold and silver pieces can be worn simultaneously and visually blended by incorporating mixed metal accents, expanding styling possibilities while still playing into complementary tones.
Add in the layering and stacking trends that have dominated jewelry over the past few years, and mixed metal starts to feel like the obvious next step as a way to wear everything you own, altogether, at once.
