The Fall Color Trends to Wear This Thanksgiving

Many will be having Thanksgiving celebrations over Zoom this year, but quarantine need not ruin the holiday. We can still gnosh on turkey and pie—or takeout. Plus, what better place to look for Thanksgiving fashion inspiration than your holiday spread. From cranberry sauce red to haricot vert green, the Fall/Winter 2020 runways reflected some of the season's favorite (and most appetizing) colors. Here, L’OFFICIEL shows how to embrace the season's biggest autumnal color trends for a festive Thanksgiving look.

Let's start with dessert–countless designers used the pumpkin pie shade for warm accents and contrasts. While Louis Vuitton and Dries Van Noten used this brown-tinged shade to accent posh leather coats, Stella McCartney, a longtime environmentalist who famously eschews leather, incorporated the shade into a chic plaid coat.

Red, with all its different variations, might just be the most quintessential fall color. While Saint Laurent debuted a reflective, brilliant monochrome, Chanel opted for a berry-infused shade for its signature tweed. Altuzarra and Dries Van Noten presented feathered pieces in cranberry red, from just a bit of trim on a skirt to a dramatic statement jacket, respectively. The runways proved that red goes with just about anything and everything this season.

Somewhere between a pastel and an earth tone, this green was one of the breakout color trends of 2020’s Fall/Winter season. A classic quilted jacket, skirt suit set, or trousers work for an understated, but fashionable and put-together look. The blanched color can also make more extravagant looks, like a Versace micro-mini or a Bottega Veneta embellished dress, more accessible to those with slightly understated but still fashion forward taste.

This vibrant shade popped on the Fall/Winter 2020 runways, from a warm cape to a satin suit. When done in sheer chiffon, like at Saint Laurent, the orange color also resembles another sign of autumn–the falling leaves that begin to weather and wear thin. In this sense, fall's translucent orange shades might be the fashion world's most accurate representations of the season. 

A color that instantly brings warmth, designers used layers to elevate this fall classic. Burberry draped a leather-lined coat over a chesnut suit, while Celine and Salvatore Ferragamo opted for outerwear in the shade.

This rich brown-red shade is perfect for this time of year when the weather starts to turn. A deep neutral with a dash of color, merlot goes with almost everything. This year, Lanvin and Salvatore Ferragamo shared rich burgundy-colored leather pieces. Prabal Gurung, on the other hand, took a dreamier approach to the color, presenting a long shimmering cardigan. While Lanvin and Ferragamo shared their statement pieces with mostly neutral accessories, Gurung contrasted his cardigan with clashing bright red plants.
