'Gossip Girl' Reboot Breaks HBO Max Streaming Records

Following the premiere, HBO Max revealed that the highly anticipated show is now the streaming service's most-watched new series.

Last week, the long-awaited 2021 reboot of Gossip Girl made its debut on HBO Max, giving finally giving fans their first taste of the Upper East Side world since the original incarnation's finale in 2012. While promotion and reactions to the series were certainly all over social media, HBO Max has now announced the TV show as the streaming service's most-watched new series.

 

"Within an hour of the episode’s premiere at 12:01 a.m. PT on Thursday, the show was trending No. 11 nationwide on Twitter, continuing as a Top 5 trend through mid-day," revealed an HBO Max spokesperson to The Wrap. In addition, the company cited more than five billion TikTok impressions related to the show's debut.

The ensemble teen drama also brought in a greater number of subscribers to the platform, with the service saying the show “saw a greater proportion of new subscribers choosing it as the first thing to watch after signing up.”

Viewership of the original series also increased 200% leading up to the reboot's premiere. The show returns to the playground of New York City's wealthiest teens within the same universe, picking up nine years after the series finale and focusing on a new group of students at Constance Billiard and St. Judes. This time around, the cast features a more diverse group in terms of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc.
