From Marie Antoinette to Belfast, Dornan has always found the heart of his characters.

It’s rare to find a performer with the kind of gravitas and scope that Jamie Dornan has, but the well-seasoned actor finds a way to disappear with every new role he takes on, whether it’s identical twin brothers in Netflix’s upcoming The Twin, a love interest in a historical drama, or a working-class father in 1960s Belfast. These roles are only a taste of what Dornan can do onscreen.

Below, find seven more roles that have made Dornan such an enduring presence in film and television over the last 20 years, including his upcoming projects.

Axel von Fersen in Marie Antoinette (2006)

Dornan’s first ever role was as Axel von Fersen in Sofia Coppola’s stylized, cult-classic Marie Antoinette. In the retelling of the iconic French queen’s story, Dornan plays Marie Antoinette’s (Kirsten Dunst) dashing, aristocratic Swedish lover who sweeps the young Queen of France off her feet in a passionate, brief affair. In the film, the count is one of the tragic queen’s many guilty pleasures.

Paul Spector in The Fall (2013)

In the Jakob Verbruggen and Allan Cubitt psychological cat-and-mouse game, Dornan plays a chilling, mild-mannered bereavement counselor leading a secret, twisted double life as a meticulous serial killer stalking women in Belfast. His scheme is upended when a steely, brilliant female detective superintendent arrives in Northern Ireland to hunt the cold predator.

Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

Christian Grey remains one of Jamie Dornan’s most recognizable roles. His turn as the enigmatic billionaire in 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey marked his Hollywood breakout, introducing audiences to a wealthy businessman whose desire for control complicates his romance with college graduate Anastasia Steele, played by Dakota Johnson. Adapted from E. L. James’s bestselling novels, the story unfolds across three films—Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed—as the couple navigates intimacy, Grey’s troubled past, and their future together. While the franchise brought Dornan international fame, he has continued to expand his range with films.

Jan Kubiš in Anthropoid (2016)

Dornan stars alongside Cillian Murphy in Sean Ellis’s directed Anthropoid, as Jan Kubiš, a neurotic and determined exiled Czechoslovak soldier who infiltrates his occupied homeland in 1941 with Jozef Gabčík (Murphy) to execute an incredibly dangerous, covert Allied mission. The press tour for the film also soft-launched Dornan and Murphy’s friendship and banter and introduced the internet to their natural and unhinged banter.

Paul Conroy in A Private War (2018)

In Matthew Heineman’s gritty drama, fearless and lauded war correspondent Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike) ventures into the most perilous frontlines of global conflict, battling internal trauma while bearing witness to the human cost of war. Dornan plays Paul Conroy, her gritty, fiercely loyal, and protective combat photojournalist who risks everything to capture the truth on film.

Edgar Paget in Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)

It feels like just yesterday that Dornan made us all laugh with his surprising turn as the endearing Edgar Paget, the earnest and sweet, musical-obsessed, lovelorn henchman in Josh Greenbaum’s comedy about two eccentric best friends (Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig)who leave their small Midwestern town for a wild Florida vacation, completely oblivious to the fact that they are stumbling straight into a bizarre villain’s deadly revenge plot. Teal polos for everyone!

Pa in Belfast (2021)

My favorite Dornan role might be his turn in Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical drama film, Belfast. Told from the perspective of a young boy in 1960s Belfast, his character is sweetly referred to simply as Pa. There, Dornan plays the charismatic, loving, and deeply resilient working-class father struggling to protect and provide for his family amidst rising political tensions, as violent sectarian conflicts transform their beloved neighborhood overnight.

The Man in The Tourist (2022)

In Chris Sweeney and Daniel Nettheim’s directed drama, Dornan plays a nameless, confused amnesiac desperately navigating eccentric locals and assassins to recover his identity after being run off the road by a mysterious truck. It’s a dramatic turn that sees Dornan back into his mysterious leading man era.

Jamie Dornan returns to television in Apple TV’s upcoming heist thriller 12 12 12, starring opposite Anthony Mackie. Dornan plays an American career criminal pursued across Europe by Mackie’s disgraced FBI agent. Each episode moves between three timelines: the 12 months spent planning the heist, the 12 hours of the robbery itself, and the 12 days that follow. Both actors also serve as executive producers on the series, which premieres November 13, 2026.

Adam & Lee Walsh in The Twin (2027)

Dornan does double duty in Jeremy Lovering’s Netflix series. Dornan shows his range once again as identical twin brothers: Adam is trapped in a stale marriage while his twin Lee is the estranged, chaotic wildcard. Dornan stars alongside Mackenzie Davis whose character Nicola must deal when her estranged brother-in-law crashes back into her increasingly claustrophobic life and a terrible accident forces her and the surviving twin into a strict, week-long web of deception to protect her children.
