Cast
The cast of Irish Wish stars Lindsay Lohan as Maddie Kelly, a book editor who's in love with a famous Irish writer, Paul Kennedy, played by Welsh actor Alexander Vlahos. Lohan's best friends in the movie, Emma and Heather, are played by Elizabeth Tan and Ayesha Curry. Then, there's the tongue-in-cheek Englishman James Thomas, portrayed by English actor Ed Speleer. The OBE-anointed British actress Jane Seymour plays Lohan's assertive yet supportive mother in the film. Lohan's brother, Dakota Lohan, also briefly appears in the film.
Filming Location
Filming took place in Wicklow, situated along the country's eastern coastline. Lohan, whose ancestry is traced back to Italy and Ireland, embraced the opportunity to connect with her Irish roots. “Ireland’s so beautiful,” she said to the Netflix blog Tudum. “I’d never been, [but] my grandfather’s from there. We stayed in this little town called Dalkey. The people are so nice, and the Guinness pies were amazing.”
Other cast members shared their experiences of exploring the sights during breaks from filming.
"That place has the most epic views and vistas and history,” Curry told Tudum. “There’s so much history there, and getting to explore that a little bit in between shoot days was really cool.”
Plot
Netflix describes the film as follows:
"When the love of her life gets engaged to her best friend, Maddie puts her feelings aside to be a bridesmaid at their wedding in Ireland. Days before the pair are set to marry, Maddie makes a spontaneous wish for true love and finds herself in an alternate reality where a chance encounter shows her that sometimes you need to be careful who you wish for. With her dream seeming to come true, Maddie soon realizes that her real soulmate is someone else entirely."
The plot is a bit reminiscent of the '90s classic My Best Friend's Wedding except this time, the main character's best friend is the bride who's wedding the man she thought was her groom to be. Lohan is known for her roles in teen comedies and spirited romances as she starred in Falling for Christmas and is famous for leading roles in cult classics including Mean Girls, Freaky Friday, and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. However, this role was revealed to be sentimental to the actress as Maddie's self-discovery and journey toward independence resonated with her. “It’s important to put yourself first and know your worth,” Lohan said. “If you know you deserve better, go for it and get it.”
