See Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana in 'The Crown' Season 5
Debicki will take over the role from Emma Corrin who won a Golden Globe for their performance as Princess Diana in Season 4.
Since its first season, Netflix's hit historical drama The Crown has captivated audiences with its unyielding (but fictionalized) look inside the British Royal Family, as well as its look-a-like cast. Since the series finds new actors to portray the leads every two seasons, Netflix has recently shared a set of photos from the upcoming Season 5 to showcase the latest cast in their respective roles.
In the latest drop, fans get a taste of actors Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West as Princess Diana and Prince Charles. The pair assume the roles following Emma Corrin and Josh O'Connor's performances as the royal couple in Season 4 which garnered a Golden Globe win for Corrin.
Last month, Netflix shared a still of Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, replacing actress Olivia Colman. Lesley Manville, Jonathan Pryce, Olivia Williams, and Jonny Lee Miller have also been cast as Princess Margaret, Prince Phillip, Camilla Parker Bowles, and Prime Minister John Major, respectively.
Season 4 covers Queen Elizabeth's reign from 1979 to 1990, including the wedding of Charles and Diana, the prince's affair with Parker Bowles, and the dissolution of the royal couple's marriage. The season finale concludes with both parties contemplating separation. The coming episodes will likely depict the media storm surrounding the Prince and Princess and Wales' separation and eventual divorce. The couple formally separated in 1992 and finalized their divorce in 1996.
Historians refer to 1992 as the queen's "annus horribilus." Three of her children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, and Prince Andrew, separated from their spouses; the public learned of Charles' affair; Andrew's wife Sarah Ferguson was photographed sunbathing topless with another man. Casting announcements for Queen Elizabeth's other children and Ferguson have yet to be announced.
While Season 5 is expected to reenact major moments from the early '90s, those working on the show have not confirmed whether or not it will span to Princess Diana's fatal car crash in 1997.
