Menswear, Accents, and More: Hedi Slimane's New Celine
Since Hedi Slimane was appointed creative director for Celine—sans accent—the French fashion house has been completely revamped. Similar to how he dropped "Yves" from Saint Laurent, the stylistic choice ignited both shock and rage among hardcore Céline fans across the globe. Subsequently, Slimane then erased the entirety of the brand’s previous Instagram posts, just like he's done in the past, too. But, perhaps the biggest shock came on Wednesday when he released an instantly viral post. Wrapped in a mysterious black trench coat, shot in black and white, model Sekhou Drame is wearing Celine’s premier menswear collection. Or at least a preview of it. Tagged #CELINEBYHEIDISLIMANE, the post itself has already generated over 22,000 likes in less than 17 hours since uploading. Needless to say, anticipation for the September 28 show is spiking.
This isn’t to say that Celine doesn’t already have a core group of male fans: from film producer Hunter Gray, Kanye West, Pharrell, and of course countless others, the brand’s traditionally androgynous aesthetic has communicated well with all consumers. It won’t be a while until we fully see what Slimane’s vision of Celine looks like, but according to a report by BOF, we can expect lots of Saint Laurent Paris. “ He is doing exactly what he was hired to do, bringing his own vision to the brand,” the article states.
For those of you who aren’t content with simply waiting another two weeks for the official release, preoccupy yourselves by reading up on Hedi Slimane’s track record for improving iconic French brands. Or if you’re one of the lucky few who lives in New York City, try catching one of the Celine trucks in action. And as for this writer (A devote Phoebe Philo fan.) personally, I’m biting my nails waiting for the first look.
