Throughout the Men's Spring/Summer 2027 season, many styling choices came about. Whether it was Michael Rider pushing youth culture onto Celine or Pharrell Williams taking his collection to the beach with surf influences at Louis Vuitton, the ways one can dress up are vast. But if there were a style that somewhat ruffled some feathers, it'd be high-waisted silhouettes.
Yes, the style is traditionally more common in womenswear today. No, it's not a new phenomenon in the menswear world. The high-waisted style took over the runway in trousers, shorts, and other pants. However, the silhouette's origins are rooted in a genderless, nonconforming mission.
Usually, the garment sits either high on or above the wearer's hips, creating an elongated leg and a short torso. In the 1920s, the high waist was introduced through men's trousers that featured wide legs, cuffed hems, and fullness around the waist. Stripes, plaid, check, tweed, and herringbone patterns were most common for the style, which often had a matching suit jacket or a completely different blazer.

From women picking up on the style in the '30s to men shifting to a less formal aesthetic, high-waisted fashions remained a mainstay until the 1960s. Nonetheless, western wear continued to stick with pants featuring 10-inch rises and long zippers, Zoot suiters rocked baggy pants with a waistband that reached the chest, and European men sported pants that sat at the navel, held up by suspenders.
Even in Indian culture, philosophers didn't favor saris that showed off the midriff since they considered it to signal adultery. Dharmasastra authors expressed that women should wear garments that would hide the navel. Thus, high-rise saris are customary in daily life, festivals, and other celebrations for Indian women.
In the midst of Mod and hippie styles defining the late '60s and early '70s, the high-waisted Levi Strauss jeans signaled a counterculture war between the past and present. Yet, the traditional style was on the rise when Generation X members had harsh feelings surrounding disco style. Even when hip-hop fashion became mainstream in the '80s and '90s, high-waisted pants, shorts, and jeans were the rage for menswear at the same time.

Even though retro prints, hobo bags, and statement pieces were dominant in the 2000s, individuals like Simon Cowell, Jeremy Clarkson, and President Barack Obama wore high-rise jeans (which the public made fun of). Surprisingly enough, younger women in the mid-2010s had an obsession with high-waisted silhouettes, which continues even today.
Anthony Vaccarello's Saint Laurent showcased a great variety of high-waisted trousers that focused on movement, while Simon Porte Jacquemus also followed a similar route by bringing a summer flow that is full of happiness for his eponymous label. Givenchy by Sarah Burton had high-waisted pants galore in a multitude of textures, Jonathan Anderson's Dior added some commotion to the historic design through sequins and fringe, and Willy Chavarria played with boxer shorts and bottoms to create a high-look.
Needless to say, the high-waisted style is back in full force in the menswear department. For those interested in styling the pants, a monochromatic garment can easily be zhuged up with bold accessories or a splash of patterns. On the contrary, simpler tops, shoes, and jewelry can make the extravagant high-waisted piece shine to the max. Let's just say, the look will be in the zeitgeist for an extended period of time.
