A modern vanguard recasts watchmaking as conceptual art&ndash;and reawakens the soul of horology.&nbsp;

Revival rarely announces itself with fanfare. It begins with agitation&mdash;a quiet, collective sense that the old language no longer speaks to the moment, that form must evolve to keep meaning alive. Across the landscape of contemporary watchmaking, a similar stirring is underway. A constellation of inventive maisons&mdash;Urwerk, MB&amp;F, Ulysse Nardin, H. Moser &amp; Cie., Hublot, Richard Mille, Ressence, and even the venerable F.P. Journe&mdash;has begun reshaping horology from within. Together, they form a movement pushing timekeeping toward a more sculptural, expressive, and metaphysical realm.
In contemporary watchmaking, agitation first surfaced in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as the industry emerged from the Quartz Crisis&mdash;a forced restructuring of the Swiss mechanical watch market in response to the rise of inexpensive, mass-produced quartz-powered watches&mdash;largely intact but creatively cautious. Mechanical watchmaking had survived, but it had also become conservative, overly reverent of its own past, and increasingly formulaic. Despite widespread creative apprehension, those we now call the Revivalists set out to push the limits of their craft; although, importantly, these watchmakers don&rsquo;t tend to label themselves as such. But they recognize one another as kindred spirits. Their watches speak to each other across wrists and vitrines, forming an ongoing conversation about what time can look like when freed from expectation.
At the center of the Revivalist universe sits MB&amp;F&mdash;short for Maximilian B&uuml;sser &amp; Friends&mdash;and its founder, Max B&uuml;sser. Conceived as a &ldquo;horological concept laboratory,&rdquo; MB&amp;F functions less like a traditional brand and more like connective tissue: a meeting point for watchmakers, designers, engineers, and artists united by a belief that watchmaking is a collaborative, creative act. That ethos has quietly shaped the Revivalist movement as a whole. Many of the brands associated with it have collaborated directly, shared talent, or gained confidence simply from watching one another take risks and thrive.
The HM11 Art Deco, for instance, features four distinct &ldquo;rooms,&rdquo; as MB&amp;F describes them, which rotate around a central flying tourbillon beneath stacked sapphire domes, transforming the wrist into a miniature architectural experiment. In its latest Art Deco expression, the soft organic curves of the earlier HM11 Architect give way to the stepped geometry of 1930s skyscrapers&mdash;sunburst motifs, stained-glass red hands, and tiered crown architecture that echo Manhattan landmarks of the era, such as the Chrysler Building. It is kinetic sculpture masquerading as a timepiece.

Urwerk, founded in 1997 by watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and designer Martin Frei, is the atelier most determined to rewrite how time is displayed. The UR-230 Black Star extends that radical vision. As Baumgartner explains, &ldquo;From the very beginning, we made a deliberate choice not to confine ourselves to the same old grandes complications. Our aim has always been to push beyond the traditional boundaries of watchmaking. Each of our creations is conceived as an original work.&rdquo; The composite ceramic case absorbs light like a collapsing star before scattering it in shimmering fragments, while wandering satellite hours trace a retrograde arc with planetary grace. In the recent Ur-Freak, a collaboration with Ulysse Nardin, the storied marine chronometer house&mdash;turned&mdash;technical avant-gardist, Urwerk fuses its orbital language with the Freak&rsquo;s movement-as-minute-hand architecture. The result feels inevitable: a conceptual bridge connecting two forward-looking philosophies.
This porousness, a willingness to let outside perspectives shape the work, has become a defining Revivalist trait. Ressence, long interested in dissolving the traditional dial into a fluid display, extends its optical experimentation through the Type 3 MN, created with industrial designer Marc Newson. Founder Beno&icirc;t Mintiens says, &ldquo;I wanted to merge our universes. Knowing Marc&rsquo;s design universe, I saw a pioneer of industrial design thinking in fine watchmaking. I wanted to bring Marc&rsquo;s and Ressence&rsquo;s vision of watchmaking into one perfect product.&rdquo; Newson&rsquo;s devotion to pure form fuses seamlessly with Ressence&rsquo;s oil-filled chambers, which erase refraction&mdash;because oil and glass share similar responses to the bending of light, depth perception becomes distorted&mdash;and creates a visual effect in which indicators hover as if weightless. Time becomes a sculptural illusion.
Hublot, ever attuned to cross-disciplinary energy, channels its &ldquo;Art of Fusion&rdquo; ethos through a collaboration with American artist Daniel Arsham. As CEO Julien Tornare puts it, &ldquo;Working with Daniel is a discovery of new design and perception. This watch invites us to see time in a new light, through his unique and fluid vision.&rdquo; The MP-17 Meca-10 Arsham Sapphire looks as if it had been excavated from a speculative future: splash-shaped apertures, frosted sapphire textures reminiscent of mineral formations, and a movement exposed like geological strata. Like most of Arsham&rsquo;s work, it feels less like a timepiece than a relic from an imagined history, one shaped by erosion, memory, and invention.
Richard Mille delivers the Revivalists&rsquo; most technical expression. Since 2001, Mille has drawn from aerospace, Formula 1, and structural engineering to craft horology as high-performance sculpture. The RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat channels Brutalist architecture through its open-worked CRMA9 caliber&mdash;cutaways, tunnels, suspended planes forming a shifting topography. Light behaves almost like a collaborator, carving depth into the watch as it moves. Mille&rsquo;s work underscores a central Revivalist idea: Precision can be deeply emotional when treated as an artistic medium.

H. Moser &amp; Cie., founded in 1828 but revitalized with a modernist edge, approaches conceptualism through austerity. The Streamliner Genesis 2 trades decoration for void, its Vantablack dial swallowing nearly all reflected light. Hands appear to float in negative space, like gestures suspended in meditation. In a field often dominated by maximalism, Moser&rsquo;s restraint becomes its own form of sculpture&mdash;an argument that presence can be created through deliberate absence.
And then there is F.P. Journe, the living master whose name alone carries quiet reverence. His extraordinary FFC prototype, sparked by a late-night conversation with Francis Ford Coppola, uses a mechanical automaton hand to articulate the hours, each human-like finger arrangement denoting a new time in the 12-hour cycle with just five moving digits. The watch lands at the intersection of philosophy, cinema, and kinetic art, and when Coppola&rsquo;s personal timepiece reached nearly $11 million at auction this past December, it wasn&rsquo;t just a market event, but a cultural one: proof that horology can carry narrative and weight on a par with contemporary art.
Taken together, these maisons form an unexpected congregation: engineers, sculptors, philosophers, and futurists, each holding the same conviction that horology&rsquo;s future is expansive rather than purely preservational. Wandering satellites, off-axis indicators, oil-filled voids, sapphire frameworks, unfamiliar materials and geometries&mdash;none of these are conceived as gimmicks. By embracing creativity without limits, these watches energize collectors, challenge long-held assumptions, and quietly influence the broader industry. Ideas once considered unthinkable&mdash;unconventional materials, unexpected color, asymmetry, playful or radical complications&mdash;now filter into even the most traditional maisons.
In this way, the Revivalists function much like the avant-garde in any creative field. Not every experiment becomes mainstream, but the permission to experiment reshapes the system itself. Seen through this lens, the movement is less about disruption than renewal&mdash;a reminder that progress does not erase heritage, but extends it, keeping watchmaking alive by imagining what comes next.
