The Irony of Belittling Alessia Cara's Grammy Win
The 2018 Grammy Awards (and its aftermath) will go down in history, and despite the fact that yesterday's final list of winners was (sadly) dominated by men, one woman managed to receive the highly coveted Best New Artist award: Alessia Cara.
However, not everyone was pleased with the news. Several media outlets published stories with roundups of people expressing their disagreement with the Recording Academy's decision to award the 21-year-old Canadian singer with such an honor. We can't help but wonder: why all the backlash?
Now, Cara herself has addressed those very "critics" in a lengthy post on Instagram writing: "I am not going to be upset about something I’ve wanted since I was kid, not to mention have worked really hard for. I meant everything I said about everyone deserving the same shot. There is a big issue in the industry that perpetuates the idea that an artist’s talent and hard work should take a back seat to popularity and numbers.”
Not that she owed anyone an explanation, she continued to stand by her success: "I will not let everything I’ve worked for be diminished by people taking offence to my accomplishments and feeling the need to tell me how much I suck. here’s something fun! I’ve been thinking I suck since I was old enough to know what sucking meant." Evidently, Cara is her own biggest critic. You should be yours.
Other nominees up for this year's Best New Artist included SZA, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels and Khalid. So say what you will about the fact that your fave didn't win, but don't say she did not deserve to. After all, just because you don't personally agree with something doesn't mean it's wrong, right? If anything, Cara should be celebrated for her success as a woman. After all, that's what the entire night was about — supporting women.
