Why Kamala Harris Wore White in First Speech Post-election
During her victory speech with Joe Biden on November 7, 2020 for the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, Kamala Harris spoke to the nation dressed all in white. The outfit designed by American designer Carolina Herrera was but of course far from trivial. A true reference to American suffragettes and all-total white looks, the thoughtful outfit was chosen to pay tribute to the women that paved the way for her election. In her speech Harris assured that she would "not be the last."
Born at the beginning of the 20th century, the suffragette movement was started by Emmeline Pankhurst in the United Kingdom before spreading to several countries, including the United States. In America, the group of women campaigned for the right to vote during a time when their word was totally disregarded. In fact, the feat was only accomplished a mere century ago, in 1920.
Infact, Kamala, who is the first black woman of Indian origin to reach the second most important political office in the United States, thanked the American suffragists in words as well as the "generations of black, Asian, white, Latin, and American women who have paved the way."
“All the women who have worked to secure and protect the right to vote for over a century one hundred years ago with the 19th Amendment, 55 years ago with the suffrage law and now, in 2020, with a new generation of women in our country who put their ballot in the ballot box and continued the fight for the fundamental right to vote and to be heard,” she spoke in Wilmington, Delaware, celebrating her victory with Biden. “Tonight, I think of their struggle, their determination and the strength of their vision (...). I am their heir. ”
