Britney Spears' Father Agrees to Step Down from Conservatorship
The #FreeBritney movement is one step closer to seeing their goal come to fruition.
After 14 years under her father's control, Britney Spears is finally one step closer to getting her life back. Yesterday, Jamie Spears agreed to resign as Britney's conservator. In a new document filed in court, Jamie maintained that there are no "actual grounds for suspending or removing” him as his daughter's guardian, he still agreed to step down from his position.
"Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests," the document states.
The court filing continued, "So, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator."
In June, Britney spoke about the situation for the first time in open court, claiming that her family, within the bounds of the conservatorship, had not only micromanaged her life unnecessarily, but they had also abused their power by changing her medications and forcing her to have an IUD implanted in her which would prevent her from having more children.
She told Judge Brenda Penny, "I want to sue my family." The singer also revealed that she intends to seek a dissolution of the conservatorship overall.
In the recent court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Jamie's lawyer used the opportunity to implicate Britney's mother Lynne as well, revealing that her ex-husband has been using their daughter's estate to pay Lynne's Louisiana home as well as its maintenance and a weekly maid service.
The filing continued, "Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and include a resolution of matters pending before the Court."
In response, Britney's lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, said, “We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed," before adding, "This is a major victory for Britney Spears and another step toward justice.”
