The Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2019
2019 was a truly wild year. In the past 12 months, we've seen shocking fashion moments, the takeover of Euphoria makeup, and a plethora of the funniest memes. In the midst of navigating all the pop culture madness that fittingly caps a turbulent decade, we have also seen some of the biggest celebrity breakups as many high-profile relationships come to their ends (and beginnings). Some were surprises, while some were....not so much, but all of them got people talking.
See below for our list of some of the biggest celebrity breakups of 2019, just in case you forgot. Enjoy!
Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott
The pair, who have been at the center of celebrity relationship gossip since they began dating in mid-2017, broke up (or went on a break) in early October, much to the dismay of many (me). The two share a daughter, Stormi, who has been making headlines since before she was born and has won hearts on Instagram ever since—the first snap Jenner shared of her was the platform's most-liked photo until an egg took over in January. The couple is continuing to co-parent, as they remain on good terms with one another.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
There is no denying that the separation of Miley and Liam was one of the biggest celebrity breakups of the year, given their relationship history and the rumors that surrounded the split. After 10 years on and off, the two finally married in 2018, but they announced their separation after just eight months of marriage. Cyrus, who released her single "Slide Away" to address the breakup, briefly dated Kaitlynn Carter and is now in a relationship with Cody Simpson.
Kyle Draper and Laverne Cox
After two years of dating, Cox announced the end of their relationship on her Instagram account in June, saying that “after much soul searching and tears from both of us, we have decided it's time to go our separate ways,” and that “we know our relationship meant so much to so many people, especially trans folks, giving them hope that this kind of love is possible for them as well.”
Matthew Hussey and Camila Cabello
Just over a year after the couple met on the set of The Today Show, Cabello and Hussey ended their relationship in June. Cabello has been dating Shawn Mendes since this summer following the release of steamy collaboration "Señorita," and the two insist it's not a publicity stunt (though fans remain unconvinced).
Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk
After 4 years of dating, Cooper and Shayk ended their relationship in June. The two had a daughter together, Lea de Seine, in March of 2017. Though the couple was private about their relationship, rumor has it that they had been trying to stay together for Lea, but ultimately, it would be easiest to keep the peace while living apart. They now co-parent their daughter, so even though talk surrounding the split made it one of the biggest celebrity breakups of 2019, this one had a fairly peaceful ending.
Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter
After nearly five years together, Jenner and Carter called it quits this summer. The two had a small ceremony in Indonesia the year before, but they were never legally married in the U.S. Shortly after their separation, Carter began dating Miley Cyrus, though that ended about as swiftly as it started.
Rita Ora and Andrew Garfield
It may even be news to you that Rita Ora and Andrew Garfield were in a relationship, considering how the couple has managed to stay away from the public. But, according to the British tabloids, they had been together since late 2018 and split up in November of this year.
Tristan Thompson and Khloé Kardashian
After two rumors of betrayal—one including Kylie Jenner's former best friend Jordyn Woods—Khloé Kardashian's relationship with Tristan Thompson ended early this year. The first rumors arose while Kardashian was still pregnant with the couple's first and only daughter, but it wasn't until True was almost a year old that the couple officially hit a breaking point. This was undeniably one of the biggest celebrity breakups of 2019 as it shook America's most famous family to its core, leaving Kylie and Travis' amicable split later in the year to feel relatively calm.
Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson
The couple of almost 11 years announced their split via Solange's Instagram this past November, though according to the musician's statement, they had been apart since earlier in the year. The two had been married since 2014 and were living in Louisiana with Solange's son from her first marriage.
Lady Gaga and Christian Carino
After getting engaged in October of 2018, the couple called it off early this year, right in the middle of awards season. Speculation started after Gaga showed up to the Grammys without her engagement ring, and her rep confirmed the news nine days later. This breakup, as well as Bradley Cooper's, left fans speculating if the splits had anything to do with A Star is Born. The two have reiterated many times that this is not the case.
Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos
While they don't work in the entertainment sphere, this couple had all eyes on them when they called it quits at the start of 2019. Definitely the biggest celebrity breakup of 2019 in the financial sphere, the divorce proceedings attracted a worldwide audience for a fascinating reason: though Jeff, the founder of Amazon, is the world's richest person, the two did not have a prenup agreement. This meant MacKenzie, who was a supportive presence for the fulfillment service's first quarter-century of existence, ended up with 25% of the stock, which added up to about $36 billion. The settlement made her one of the richest women in the world, and she has pledged to give at least half her fortune to charity.
