Celebrities and "Directioners" around the world were rattled Wednesday night by somber news: Liam Payne, a former member of One Direction, died on October 16 at the age of 31 after falling from a balcony in Argentina.

Since the band split in 2016, Payne had been focusing on his solo music career and mostly recently released his “Teardrops” single in March 2024. This came after the English singer’s yearslong and continued struggle with addiction and mental health, in addition to controversies tied to past romantic partners.

Payne's former One Direction bandmates — including Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan — shared a public statement via the group's Instagram page. "We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam," they wrote. Tomlinson posted his own ode. Artists like Quavo (who made "Strip That Down" with Payne), Rita Ora, and Charlie Puth shared messages online as well.

Through One Direction, Payne was part of a music scene that shaped much of a generation, starting in 2010 when they were discovered and assembled on the X Factor. Whether their pop hits were a personal obsession or felt like something inescapable, the group defined the 2010s. Payne is survived by his son, both parents, and two older sisters.

"It is too painful to even write this. Liam, you were a true friend. One of the most loyal, sensitive, dynamic, funny, and unique people I ever had the good fortune to meet. True friendship is a rare gift, and we hope and assume that gift will last a lifetime. Today, my heart breaks for how short life can be," Edward Enninful, Vogue's global creative and cultural advisor, penned in his post.
