In 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle marked the one-year anniversary of their announcement to formally leave the royal family. In 2020, the couple announced that they were looking for financial independence and would move to the United States.

Following the announcement, the Sussexes were harshly criticized by the press and social media. However, in March 2020, they decided to permanently withdraw from Instagram, though the archived account is still accessible online. In a 2021 interview with Fast Company, Prince Harry spoke about the dangers of social media and fake news.

While discussing the impact of fake news on the U.S. Capitol riots, the prince also spoke about how tabloid coverage sparked a flurry of social media harassment for him and his family. Throughout the interview, he calls for a major overhaul of online platforms.

However, Harry also commented on the positive aspects of social media and shared that he and Meghan hope to return in the future. "The truth is that, despite their well-documented ills, social media can offer a means of connection and community, which are vital for us as human beings. We need to hear each other's stories and be able to share ours. That’s part of the beauty of life," he said.

"We will return to social media when we find it right for us—perhaps when we see more significant commitments to change or reform," added the Duke of Sussex. "But now, we have invested a lot of our energy in learning about this space and how we can help."

Now, nearly three years since leaving social media, the Internet believes the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has made a quiet return. Sources told Page Six that Markle has an Instagram handle, @meghan, that she is preparing for a socials comeback.

"Meghan was set to go live on Insta, but changed her mind shortly before she launched her Archetypes podcast, so it’s just sitting there now," a source said.

That said, the Instagram account currently holds a profile photo featuring flowers and has no posts, so there is still no complete confirmation that it is truly Markle's account.
