<p>December 2025&rsquo;s &ldquo;Cold Moon&rdquo; will rise as the final supermoon of the year.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-start="243" data-end="572">As winter inches closer and the daylight slips away almost faster than you can notice, December&rsquo;s night sky is offering a much-needed moment of brightness. This month&rsquo;s final full moon&mdash;known as the Cold Moon or Long Night Moon&mdash;will also arrive as a supermoon, casting an amplified glow just as the Northern Hemisphere heads toward the winter solstice.</p>
<p data-start="574" data-end="897">The December 2025 supermoon will reach its closest point to Earth at approximately 221,965 miles, making it the third and final consecutive supermoon of the year. Because it rises during the longest nights of the year, its light lingers low along the horizon, appearing larger and more radiant than a typical full moon.</p>

<h2>When to See December&rsquo;s Full Supermoon</h2>

<p data-start="1134" data-end="1396">The next full moon arrives Thursday, December 4, reaching peak illumination at 6:14 p.m. ET. Expect it to appear oversized and golden as it lifts above the horizon&mdash;an optical effect caused by atmospheric distortion and the moon&rsquo;s low position in the sky.</p>
<p data-start="1398" data-end="1674">Much like November&rsquo;s Beaver Moon, December&rsquo;s supermoon will rise around the same time for several nights, making it visible on December 3, 4, and 5. <h2 data-start="1681" data-end="1710">What Makes It a Supermoon?</h2>

<p data-start="1712" data-end="2006">A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with the moon&rsquo;s closest approach to Earth&mdash;known as perigee. NASA notes that when the moon sits roughly 226,000 miles away or closer, it can appear noticeably brighter and larger than average, even if the difference is subtle to the naked eye.</p>
<p data-start="2008" data-end="2193">Supermoons tend to occur in clusters of three or four. The 2025 sequence began in early autumn and will conclude in January 2026, with the next series not returning until November 2026.</p>
<p data-start="2008" data-end="2193">The Cold Moon gets its name from traditional Native American and colonial sources, marking the arrival of frigid temperatures and the deepening dark that precedes winter. It&rsquo;s also referred to as the Long Night Moon&mdash;an ode to its appearance near the winter solstice, when the sun sets earliest and nights stretch longest.</p>
