However, a new, unfamiliar name is making headlines: Dayana Yastremska, the 25-year-old Ukrainian and the 42nd-ranked women's tennis player in the world. And while that is an incredible resume in itself, Yastremska just performed an astonishing feat: she beat <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/coco-gauff-miniskirt-new-balance-first-round-french-open-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Coco Gauff</a> in the first round of the tournament.</p>
<p>Gauff is currently ranked number 2 in the world and is coming off the heels of a French Open performance that made her the first American to win the tournament since Serena Williams in 2015. Really, the 21-year-old has made a name for herself as "the people's princess" of the sport. She entered the scene as a fresh-faced 15-year-old with the talent to beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019, making it to the fourth round. Gauff has historically had a difficult run at the All England Club, never making it further since. Though another player also made it to the fourth round of the Wimbledon tournament in 2019, that player is <span>Dayana Yastremska. </span></p>

<p>Yastremska was born on May 15, 2000, in Odesa, the third-largest city in Ukraine, situated on the Black Sea. Though it was known early on, after her first tennis tournament at a mere seven years old, that her childhood would be nothing but average.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>She made her Women's Tennis Association main draw debut at the age of 15.&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Even the most talented tennis players may never make it to the main draw for the major tournaments. She was picked as a wildcard for the Istanbul Cup at 15, but lost in the first round. The next year, she returned as a wildcard pick and made it to the quarterfinals.</p>

<h2>Yastremska made the WTA Top 25 in 2020.&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Her 2019 season proved her to be one of the greats, as she continually climbed the WTA rankings and even qualified to play for the WTA Elite Trophy, finishing the season ranked as the 21st best player in the world in January 2020.</p>

<h2>She has dabbled in making music.&nbsp;</h2>

<p>While she is most notably known for her tennis skills, Yastremska came out with a single titled "Thousands of Me" in May of 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>She fled her home in Ukraine after the 2022 invasion by Russia.&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Yastremska has overcome extreme adversity after being separated from her parents during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The tennis star and her sister left the country on a boat bound for Romania, eventually making it to France and escaping the war.</p>
