Thirty years in the making, Jacques Garcia’s restoration of the Château du Champ de Bataille is a celebration of the building’s pre-revolutionary history, its interiors enriched with treasures once owned by Madame de Pompadour and Marie Antoinette.

Throughout his 40-year career as a globally in-demand decorator, Jacques Garcia quietly dreamed of a castle. That dream became reality with Champ de Bataille, a vast Norman estate that has become his most personal project—and perhaps his most revealing. Garcia often recounts how he developed an early fascination with interiors steeped in history. “I have never loved emptiness,” he confides, adding, “A room must tell something, otherwise it has no reason to exist.”
This obsession with narrative, memory, and staging runs through his work. In the 1980s and ’90s, Garcia established a signature style: sumptuous velvets, dim lighting, and a carefully curated assortment of rare objects. Paris’s Hôtel Costes became both an aesthetic manifesto and a cultural phenomenon. His work in hotels such as La Mamounia in Marrakech, NoMad in New York, and the Métropole in Monte Carlo helped spread a decorative language that would influence international hospitality for decades, inspiring an entire generation of designers and hoteliers. The return of warm interiors, the gradual abandonment of radical minimalism, and the revival of color and rich materials owe a great deal to his work.
Garcia champions an aesthetic of memory. “Minimalism is often a fear of bad taste,” he says wryly. This critical stance contributes to his singularity. He embraces a taste for controlled opulence, patina of time, and the theatricality of space. Across his international projects he adapts his decorative vocabulary without ever compromising his core principle: to create spaces that feel like novels. “I hate hotels that leave no lasting impression,” he says. Behind the statement lies a simple conviction: Décor must translate into an experience.

In 1992, Garcia visited the Château du Champ de Bataille. The building, constructed in 1651 by Alexandre de Créquy, was by the time of Garcia’s visit in severe disrepair: gardens vanished, interiors empty, roofs on the verge of collapse. While many saw it merely as a romantic ruin, Garcia recognized it as the project of a lifetime, so much so that he would later recount feeling immediate shock. “I didn’t buy a castle,” he says. “I bought decades of work.”
Champ de Bataille is part of an earlier wave of grand residences that anticipate Versailles, but on a smaller, less monumental scale. Its sober, balanced architecture is rooted in strict symmetry, characteristic of early French classicism. The park had completely disappeared by the 20th century. Garcia therefore undertook a total—almost archaeological—reconstruction of the gardens.
The project quickly became one of the most ambitious private French-style garden restorations in Europe. Taking inspiration from André Le Nôtre, the landscape architect behind the Palace of Versailles, Garcia envisioned a park spanning more than 80 hectares, structured by monumental perspectives, water basins, groves, and pavilions. The Italian garden, Persian garden, open-air theater, and Temple of Fame form a landscape conceived as a sequence of scenes. “A garden must be experienced like a book,” he says. This idea of spatial storytelling also informs his interiors: each space has its own distinct atmosphere and dramatic character.

The work on the gardens alone spanned more than 30 years. Thousands of trees were planted, kilometers of canals were excavated, and statues were either acquired or commissioned. Garcia personally financed much of the work through his international design projects. Inside, the space is just as radical. He set out to recreate the grand spirit of 18th-century aristocratic interiors without falling into the trap of a museum-like reconstruction. He frequently speaks of an “imaginary castle”—a telling phrase, as Champ de Bataille is not a strict historical restoration, but the materialization of an ideal.
Underlying this restoration is his desire to “recover the furnishings of Versailles, looted and dispersed after the French Revolution.” The collections he’s assembled are extraordinary: royal furniture, tapestries, gilded bronzes, and Old Master paintings. Over the decades, Garcia has become one of the most important private collectors of French furniture. Among a vast collection of over 20,000 pieces are Louis XV furnishings likely commissioned by Madame de Pompadour, as well as armchairs and sofas that once belonged to Marie Antoinette.
Garcia remains a frequent presence at auctions, searching for objects tied to the history of Europe’s great residences. “I collect in order to understand,” he says. For him, every object carries the trace of a use, a gesture, an era. He does not hesitate to alter interior architecture to accommodate an exceptional piece: For him, the furniture dictates the space as much as the space accommodates the furniture. This inverted logic reveals a deeply decorative approach to heritage: The estate is not frozen in time, but rather evolves with each new acquisition.

“Heritage exists only if it is shared,” says Garcia. He often emphasizes this educational aspect of Champ de Bataille, now a popular destination for art and architecture enthusiasts. The property reflects a career built on refusing to separate contemporary creation from historical legacy, and a rare sense of longevity in the world of interior design, where trends tend to move quickly.
To those who marvel at his commitment to this colossal undertaking, Garcia responds simply: “We spend our lives leaving traces behind.”
