Luar’s Raul Lopez and Zacapa Rum Celebrate Female Artistry With an Exclusive Rum Kit
Luar and Zacapa create a hosting bag derived from Luar's famed purse, the Ana bag.
Luar Clothing is bridging the gap between fashion and spirits with a new collaboration with Zacapa Rum, giving each bottle a chic carrying case in the brand’s new Ana bag. By collaborating with Zacapa, Lopez, who named the Ana after the influential women in the designer’s life, furthers his goal of celebrating women as Zacapa's bottle casing features a Petate-woven case crafted by a team of over 700 women in Guatemala who keep the art of Petate weaving alive. Petate is a special method of basket weaving that employs the usage of fibers of the Palm of Petate. The tradition of Petate weaving, spanning over 25 years, has been handed down through generations of Guatemalan women, a legacy that the Guatemalan rum brand plans to support and uphold by wrapping their bottles with hand-crafted covers.
"I'm beyond excited to introduce this collection, a game-changer for those moments when we gather to celebrate in style," Lopez said in a statement. "Collaborating with Zacapa has been an enriching experience, a celebration of our shared Latino heritage, and a tribute to the roots that ground us. The craftsmanship of the incredible women of the Petate weaving communities fills me with immense respect."
Zacapa formulated a collection of rums aged 10 to 25 years, created in barrels finished with French oak casks which work to preserve the rum’s aroma. The collection of rum is beautifully encased in Luar’s CFDA-award-winning Ana bag that Lopez created to be a Y2K-inspired versatile piece of luxury. Worn by the likes of Dua Lipa and Troye Sivan, the gender-inclusive purse made from pure leather makes for an attractive bag to store Zacapa’s rum in.
This collaborative effort between the Dominican and Guatemalan brands is an homage to their shared Latin heritage and serves as an initiative to support the female artisans who create Zacapa’s Petate-woven cases. In this partnership, Lopez honors the women who have influenced his life's journey through the Ana Bag while also spotlighting the female-led rum brand guided by Lorena Vásquez, the Master Blender at Zacapa Rum.
"Every time I hold a bottle of Zacapa, I'm filled with pride, inspired by the extraordinary skill and spirit of the Petate weavers, whose artistry stands as the icon of our brand, uniting us in our Guatemalan roots,” Vásquez said in a statement. "For these remarkable women, the art of Petate weaving is a profound source of empowerment, allowing them to sustain and cultivate brighter futures for their families and community. In partnership, we blend their stories of tradition and mastery into every drop of Zacapa, making each sip a homage to the rich tapestry of our country's culture."
