A First Look at LOEWE's Salone Del Mobile Project
For its fourth project with the annual Milanese furniture fair, Salone Del Mobile, LOEWE is looking to transform old world textile works and experimental design into contemporary decor.
The April event (17th–22nd) will see 50 expertly crafted blankets and tapestries from artisans around the world presented by the brand. Twelve styles of limited-edition tote bags, assembled at the LOEWE workshops in Spain, will accompany. The first of the totes was introduced during the brand’s Spring 2018 presentation, in Look #3, featuring Andean iconography.
The year long project involved LOEWE traveling to Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America to source both traditionally and contemporarily crafted textiles. According to the brand, “Classical techniques include blankets crafted with the Japanese ‘boro’ technique, African patchwork from Togo and Senegal, Indian ribbon embroidery, and styles woven in hemp, jersey, or leather. More experimental designs include blankets adorned with safety pin appliqué, needle punch leopard spots, Spanish shearling intarsia, and black and white portrait photography printed on feathers.”
For the design method curious, LOEWE has commissioned documentary videos highlighting the artistry in select locations. All profits from the project will be donated to charities supporting the education of women in minority communities and international traditional craft.
The totes will be sold LOEWE’s Milano boutique during the fair and then will see a worldwide launch in selected LOEWE stores a year from now, in October 2018.
