The new creative director of Chloé, Chemena Kamali has been bringing Bohemian fun and freshness since her appointment to the role was revealed in October 2023. The French fashion house’s latest project, Chloé Arts, continues this trend, but with a twist.

Chloé Arts is an art initiative that aims to celebrate female talent and emerging artists, sparking conversations between previously unlinked fields of the arts. The first edition features the work of energetic Danish artist Mie Olise Kjærgard.

A painter first and foremost, Kjærgaard has made a name for herself portraying female liberation. She paints women who “make their own defined choices,” as Chemena Kamali, creative director at Chloe, put it in a press release.

Kjærgaard’s work depicts women seen through the female gaze, living adventurously and letting go of their inhibitions. Without a doubt, the women that she paints are subjects, but verbs too, figures of pure energy, achievement, and change. Her pieces are filled with movement; hair constantly flies in unexpected directions, even if the character is standing stock-still. One begins to get the feeling that the reason for this is not the wind, but the women themselves, who are in a state of ultimate freedom, like the wandering breeze.

The subjects of Kjærgaard’s paintings are sporty, often wearing tank tops and sneakers, but boldly opting not to tie their hair back while they pursue their every whim without regard for outside expectations. According to the artist, concepts like “hitting a tennis ball satisfyingly perfectly,” guide the energy of her paintings, and align well with how Chloé pairs playful style with precise craftsmanship–effortlessness with elegance.

Chloé Arts now has eight of Kjærgaard’s paintings on display in the house’s Paris flagship store at the same time as Kamali’s first collection for the house, forming an electrifying conversation between two novel aesthetics, all at a venerated site.
