Is Lubricant Safe to Use as a Makeup Primer?
A dermatologist reveals whether TikTok's latest beauty trend is actually safe for the skin.
What's the most controversial makeup trend you've ever adopted? Each season we follow the emergence of new techniques and looks, which are gaining prominence on social networks and the taste of beauty lovers. And the best bet is the use of lubricant as a primer. Although the idea seems controversial, it is rapidly gaining traction due to its effect on the skin.
The trend, which went viral thanks to TikTok, already has 10.2 million views with the #lubeprimer. On social media, users can find several makeup tutorials using the product or even videos of influencers experiencing the trend for the first time and reacting to the item.
Among the reactions, a good skin feeling and glow are some of the features described in the videos. When testing the trend, the user @seananthonyv even asked, "tell me why this is performing so much better than my usual primer?" The video already has over 2 million views.
But is betting on an intimate product directly on the face advisable? "There are always risks of allergies, irritation, in the case of the lubricant. If it is just Vaseline, it can weigh and clog the pores, facilitating the appearance of pathologies such as acne," said Dr. Fernanda Porphirio, Dermatologist at Clínica Vanité de São Paulo.
According to the doctor, if the lubricant has other components in the formula, the chances of having allergies, redness, and peeling are even greater.
When asked about other products that could replace the primer, Dr. Porphirio revealed, "What I usually suggest is the moisturizer, which actually is nothing more than the function they are taking from the lubricant. Because the lubricant has a lot of Vaseline, which ends up hydrating the skin well."
The dermatologist also emphasizes the importance of betting on a suitable moisturizer for your skin type, to prevent pore clogging and the appearance of acne.
