10 Must-See NYFW Spring/Summer 2022 Beauty Trends
Beehives, zebra print, and cat-eyes, oh my! These memorable beauty trends created all the buzz during Spring/Summer 2022 shows.
Neon Eyeshadow
Fashion week veteran Rachel Comey is still making a statement after two decades of runway success. Celebrity makeup artist, Romy Soleimani, partnered with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics to splash neon magic across the runway. Electric blues, bright pinks, and vibrant yellows made quite a statement against seamlessly youthful skin.
Courtesy of M.A.C Cosmetics and makeup artist Sil Bruinsma, Prabal Gurung models sported ethereal neon eyes with subtle lips and a bold brow. Bright hues flirt along the edges of the lid, leaving the middle sector exposed for a widening effect. Brunismana captioned his inspiration for the look, “sultry skin + acid highlight.”
The Cat Eye
Markarian’s first runway show did not disappoint. Hosted in the iconic Rainbow Room, the Gentleman Prefer Blondes-inspired show was completed with dripping jeweled headpieces and an equally impressive cat-eye. Charcoal-lined eyes perfectly complement the collection's timeless cocktail dresses and opulent evening gowns. Markarian continues to reach new levels of effortless luxury with classic old-school glamour.
Eye Art
Rodarte designers, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, create a psychedelic dream on the runway with barefoot models and intricate face art. Forehead sunrises, zebra-printed eyes, and blue flames engulfed the models’ faces as they congregated around the stage to celebrate the finale. Makeup artist James Kaliadros proudly notes that each piece was painted entirely by hand. The sisters pulled inspiration from their recent visit to Georgia O’Keefe’s New Mexican oasis, and Kaliadros proudly executed.
The wise Miranda Priestly once said, “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking?”. However, these artful designs are kind of groundbreaking. Collina Strada partnered with the millennial-fav makeup brand, Glossier to paint outside of the line and veer away from the brand's traditionally minimalist approach. Using the vibrant range of Color Slide Gels, makeup artist Allie Smith freehanded oversized floral outlines on select model’s faces.
Rainbow Hair
Another neon moment from Collina Strada and we couldn’t be more excited. Designer Junya Watanabe and wigmaker Tomihiro Kono collaborated with Japense hairstylist Chika to create a range of ropey rainbow hair without dying models' locks an eccentric shade of neon. Each extension was created by hand with double sided tape and an entourage of chunky braids and finger waves.
Nostalgic Hair Re-Vamp
The “Ladies Who Lunch” inspired runway show was an authentic nod to housewife culture. Dozens of models swarmed the runway to show off their impressively quaff beehives and an assortment of baby accessories. Creative Director Jeremy Scott sparked runway buzz with tweed pastel sets, oversized earrings, and even an even more oversized baby bottle sported by new mother, Gigi Hadid.
Christian Cowan brought the party to the runway featuring a flock of partygoers with ‘90’s catwalk style. Of course, nothing says a party more than sequins, feathers, and color-block pastels. Models showed off their feathery ‘90’s blowouts and perfectly layered hair that would make even Rachel Green jealous.
Brazilian brand PatBO stunned NYFW guests with their proud debut of it-girl beachwear and show-stopping dresses. Nothing makes a statement more than opening and closing your first runway show with Alessandra Ambrosio as the lead. The former VS Angel owned the runway with her signature loosely curled and effortless waves.
Bold Lips for the Spring
Coach continues to make a statement, and it doesn’t stop at the puff bags. Courtesy of makeup icon Pat McGrath, models reunited vampy lips with the NYFW runway. Deep ember and onyx create a striking pop against the model's fair skin and amber waves.
Michael Kors debuted his Spring/Summer 2022 collection with an iconic Gwen Stefani-esque red lip. Minimal eye makeup and a flawless base allowed the pop to make an iconic statement. Irina Shayk proudly opened the show, dripping in the impressive new collection with a vibrant red lip to complete.
Sultry and Sexy Smokey Eye
Makeup artist Etienne Ortega revived Stacey Bennet’s classic smokey eye. The effortless yet chic eye is an Alice and Olivia classic that is around to stay. Minimal makeup and natural lips were the perfect canvas for the sultry black swash to pop.
Pastel Pink Beads
Moschino decorated the runway with pastel florals and kitschy, larger-than-life accessories. One of the most distinctive looks, spotted on model Achenrin, came from the hair-mastermind, Danilo. The bubbly, pastel pink beads were the perfect modern touch to the runway’s classic yet playful collection.
Rainbow Barrettes
Stacey Bennett is never shy when it comes to color and pattern. However, one specific accessory spotted on the models particularly stuck out. Dainty rainbow barrettes were carefully scattered within the models' hair. One blink, and you might miss it, but these playful accessories are sure to be seen again.
Face Frame Braids
NYFW warmly welcomed Altuzarra back since moving to Paris in 2017. Altuzarra partnered with hair marvels Odile Gilbert and Tresemmé to frame the face of the runway’s most beloved veteran. Gigi Hadid took to the runway with a delicate pair of braids each framing the face. Striking and simple, Gilbert’s work did not go unnoticed.
