14 Must-See Fashion Trends From the Spring/Summer 2024 Runways
From hot pants to denim on denim, these are the hottest trends from the Spring/Summer 2024 runways.
This fashion month has been one to remember with an array of new creative directors debuting their collections for top labels, noteworthy street style moments, and exciting celebrity attendees. But above all, we can't help but keep our attention on the new trends. Brands such as Gucci, Tom Ford, Bottega Veneta, and Ferragamo have already ushered in new ideas we can't wait to start adding to the mood board. Other designers also have not been shy in putting forward their unique vision to their collections, with quite a few common themes in certain presentations, henceforth unveiling the must-see trends of next season. From denim on denim to shiny metallics, here are 14 trends that deserve to be added to your wardrobe come the Spring/Summer 2024 season.
String Theory
Come spring, fringe is coming for your clothes. However, designers are leaning into longer lengths. Alexander McQueen debuted a fitted blazer dress with sequin fringe swept across the front before cascading down the sides, while Prada opted for a fringe skirt overlay.
Wearable Clothes
In a world where virality is chased and micro trends run rampant, this season, designers took a step back—presenting a lineup of garments meant to be worn and not just seen. Sabato de Sarno's new Gucci leaned heavily into this, with an array of commercial-ready garments—though it still felt fresh, such as its crystallized mini dresses and leather pencil skirts with a mid-slit.
Loud Luxury
Quiet luxury who? Enough of the whispers, designers are shouting on the Spring/Summer 224 runways. Contrasting prints, vivacious colorways, and unique proportions—standing out is the name of the game next spring in the loudest way possible. For inspiration, look no further than Marni, Rabanne, and Balmain.
Pale Yellow
Pale yellow has dominated the runways this season, with a stamp of approval from Max Mara and Gcds. Fendi worked in the shade through color blocking, pairing a pale yellow tank with a more vibrant yellow sweater, grey trousers, white heels, and a bright orange handbag. Loewe introduced the hue in a simpler fashion, with a slim-fit maxi dress styled with sequin flats.
Pale Blue
A more saturated version of cerulean blue, pale blue is here to take over. The soothing shade popped up on numerous catwalks, including Marni, Fendi, Tod's, and Prada—though it took shape in a variety of silhouettes, from basics such as sleeveless tanks to formalwear like silk column dresses.
Hot Pants
Out: Mini skirts. In: Hot Pants.
Brands such as Gucci, Tom Ford, and Prada are all on the same page: Hot pants are the new mini silhouette to wear next spring. But don't panic, there are plenty of ways to hop on the trend without feeling exposed. Be it throwing on a fringe skirt overlay (as seen at Prada) or staying covered on top with an oversized blouse (as spotted at Khaite), the motto for next spring is "go short or go home."
'90s Minimalism
Clean lines, neutral shades, and casual suiting — the Spring/Summer 2024 runways have been a throwback to '90s minimalism. Maybe it's the Supermodel effect, but unveiled on the runway have been pieces well worthy of '90s model-off-duty style. That said, designers have certainly interpreted the trend in their own way, be it MM6 Maison Margiela's reinterpreted version of the slip dress (a '90s staple) or Gucci's array of classic wardrobe separates.
Bright Colors
Taking a step back from the pastels that are typically associated with spring, designers went more vibrant, embracing brighter hues. It's not just one color either, brands weren't shy in incorporating a range of bright colors, from yellow to red to blue. If bright colors seem a bit too Sesame Street for your liking, try having a monochromatic moment — keeping the outfit chic and on-trend.
Denim on Denim
The great American classic denimwear was certainly a hot topic that took over the Spring/Summer 2024 runways in New York City as well as Milan and Paris. Whether it was a Canadian tuxedo or a denim piece with graphic prints, be sure to note all the ways to play around with denim in your wardrobe come next season.
Metallics
Whether it be a liquid gold (as seen by Ralph Lauren) or a shiny silver worthy to wear on Beyoncé's Renaissance Tour, we spotted a variety of metallic looks for Spring/Summer 2024. A major step up from what you'd find in your local Party City store, the daunting colors are balanced with more simplistic silhouettes, keeping the shades a standout yet easy to wear for everyday 'fits.
Oversized Outerwear
Oversized proportions are back in style for Spring/Summer 2024 as decided by Etro, Khaite, and Bottega Veneta. Beyond the traditional winter overcoat, the oversized outerwear fit is especially taking shape in blazers and suiting, allowing an office-friendly take on the trend.
Matching Sets
Coach and Khaite showed us that matching sets don't have to be just for loungewear. A leather blazer and maxi skirt set or a two-piece fur-lined skirt suit can certainly make a mark in your wardrobe trend-wise.
Full Bloom
Florals for spring will always be groundbreaking. But this isn't your grandmother's florals — designers are giving it a fresh update. Instead of all-around prints à la Burberry, Etro opted for floral applique, while Tanner Fletcher cosigned floral embellishments as a unique detail to the design.
Sheer Materials
Sheer has been here as of late, and designers have declared it's here to stay — though next season there's an added twist. Going beyond a sheer dress with neutral-toned underwear underneath, brands like Ferragamo and Saint Laurent are making a case to strip even further, going nearly bare underneath (yes, we mean it's time to free the nipples).
