A deep dive into the fashion and films from the late 1990s and early 2000s that cemented the internet's recent desire to dress like the next Joan of Arc.&nbsp;

Hear ye, hear ye! If you're wondering why chainmail accessories or corset-style tops paired with maxi skirts, princess "cone" hats, or Renaissance Faire GRWMs are showing up on your feed, it's because the internet's latest trending aesthetic longs to travel back in time and recreate the moment when pop culture from the late 1990s and early 2000s collided with a romanticized vision of the Middle Ages. But why is this trend, since dubbed "medieval Y2K," having its revival now, and is so eagerly embraced by Gen Z?&nbsp;

<h3 style="text-align: center;">The Whimsy and Romance of the Medieval Y2K Aesthetic</h3>

The viral TikTok audio from the 2007 film&nbsp;Shrek the Third, "So then I was like, I'd rather get the black plague and lock myself in an iron maiden than go out with you," YouTube's ongoing fixation with <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/pop-culture/brittany-broski-royal-court-celebrity-podcasts-fangirl-pop-culture">Brittany Broski's "Royal Court"</a> series, Chappell Roan's "knightcore" looks at the 2024 VMAs, and the fairytale codes of PinkPantheress' 2025 music video "Close to You"—all these cultural moments from the past two years are driving the internet's fascination (and surge in search interest) with the medieval Y2K aesthetic.
But this is not the first time we've witnessed the fusion of contemporary attitudes with historical fantasy for a cheeky, intentionally inaccurate reproduction of the past.&nbsp;
The <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/beauty/chappell-roan-new-music-video-the-subway-hair-inspiration">Pre-Raphaelite</a> artists of the Victorian era idealized the Middle Ages and Arthurian legends with hyperrealistic settings worthy of a fairy tale—pristine forests, shimmering lakes, and vibrant colors—all to achieve an ethereal, dreamlike quality in their paintings. The painters' love for realism didn't apply to the authentic conditions individuals lived through during the medieval period, only a romanticized version of it. Still, the artistic movement's intense focus on nature and scenes from folklore gained traction, perhaps in a counter-response to the rapid technological advancements of the ongoing&nbsp;Industrial Revolution. 
Later, the medieval revival of the 1960s and 1970s—yet another era facing major political and social change—brought the aesthetic from a subculture to the mainstream. Films like Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) parodied and popularized the medieval fantasy aesthetic; the first Renaissance Faire was staged in Los Angeles in 1963, and "hippie" or "bohemian" fashion featured medieval elements like wide sleeves, long skirts, tunic-style tops, and lots of flower motifs. 
So, really, the medieval revival we're experiencing nowadays is not new; it just features a campy and nostalgic Y2K twist.&nbsp;

From Max Mara's Fall/Winter 2026 collection to Betsey Johnson's Fall/Winter 1997 collection, we can clearly see a medieval aesthetic styled for the runway, both then and now.&nbsp;
Max Mara's "Ancient &amp; Modern" theme uses a neo-medieval lens while still making the Dark Ages feel wearable and contemporary. The fashion house even named Matilde di Canossa, an 11th-century Italian countess, as the historical muse for the show—reimagining the medieval noblewoman as a metaphor for the powerful, modern woman of today. Betsey Johnson's collection is where '90s grunge meets gothic and medieval silhouettes, yet the designs still maintain Johnson's signature femininity.&nbsp;
And of course, you can't forget Drew Barrymore's custom Ferragamo-designed gown for the Ever After gala to promote her film of the same name, at the Palazzo Corsini in Rome.&nbsp;

An iconic fashion moment, the romantic Renaissance-inspired dress seemed straight out of a storybook—after all, Drew Barrymore does star as the heroine in this beloved 1998&nbsp;Cinderella retelling. Ferragamo even worked with the film's costume director, Jenny Beavan, to collaborate on Barrymore's glass slippers.&nbsp;
Ever After is one of the earlier examples (not counting The Princess Bride or Labyrinth from the '80s) of an entire genre of "medieval Y2K" movies that social media is nostalgic for—and even looking to for outfit inspiration.&nbsp;

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Medieval Y2K Flicks</h3>

A young Ledger starring in cross-genre film 'A Knight's Tale' as William Thatcher. At only 21-years-old, Ledger's role in 'A Knight's Tale' was his fifth major role after his breakout film '10 Things I Hate About You' in 1999.

In addition to the runways, movies like Shrek (2001), Black Knight (2001), The Knight's Tale (2001), Ella Enchanted (2004), and Virgin Territory (2007) all provided a cinematic world where early 2000s styling was juxtaposed against elements of period-piece costuming to create a hybridized, deliberately inaccurate look—just like Anne Hathaway's velvet cloak and flowy bell sleeves.&nbsp;
The Knight's Tale especially takes the anachronisms one step further. Heath Ledger's character, William, competes in a jousting match to Queen's "We Will Rock You"; his armor is etched with two Nike swooshes as a "mark of trade"; and in another scene, everyone is dancing and singing to "Golden Years" by David Bowie on a set that feels reminiscent of today's Medieval Times. Shannyn Sossamon's character, Jocelyn, perfectly reflects the 2000s vibe with her hair spiked, crimped, and adorned with a feather headpiece. It's absolutely how a medieval noblewoman would style her hair.&nbsp;

<h3 style="text-align: center;">So, Why Right Now?&nbsp;</h3>

Blending the campiness of the 2000s with quasi-medieval silhouettes allows Gen Z to commemorate the fantastical films of their youth and let the imagination run wild in the magical escape of nostalgia.
As "medieval Y2K" has resurfaced, social media is at the forefront of spreading the trend, giving Gen Z a completely different way to engage with the aesthetic compared to previous revivals in the 1960s and 1970s.&nbsp;
For a generation coming of age in an uncertain future, leaning into the whimsy and joy of childhood online is a much-needed antidote—but we definitely shouldn't linger in our longing for an idyllic golden age or romanticize the past, as it can cloud our vision of the present.
