Kicking off New York Fashion Week, Puma celebrates the return of the original 1999 Mostro sneaker in a transformative, futuristic way. The sportswear brand presents its collection at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City, featuring guests like Emily Ratajkowski and Ashley Graham in the front row. The ambiance is set with laser-like lights, boasting a utopian sporty feel to match the return of the old (but new) Mostro.

Although the German company showcases a mix of both custom and commercial pieces, the reimagined Mostro sneaker, seen in various colorways, seems to be the star of the show, with the clothes coming in as supporting characters. Marked by its spiky sole and accessible strap closure, the show is named after the Italian word for "monster." The highly anticipated relaunch was announced months ago, though it's only being revealed now, much to the delight of sneakerheads. Following the announcement of A$AP Rocky joining the Puma x F1 collaboration as creative director, the rapper is also the new face of the iconic sneaker.

While the Mostro was certainly the focal point of the show, the greater collection pointed to Puma's intent to lean into its history as a global sportswear name, while still looking to expand into the capital-F Fashion world. Perhaps inspired by the brand's exclusive partnership with Formula 1, a number of models walked the runway in white helmets—including one covered in crystals—as others donned abstract black sunglasses.

The last six months have seen what some might call the "yassification" of sports—a co-opting by the wider pop culture. Between Taylor Swift's fandom boosting NFL viewership tenfold to Lewis Hamilton's new Ferrari contract creating what many female F1 fans are calling the sport's "hottest racing duo," setting the stage for NYFW with Puma's overtly athletic collection feels like an apt encapsulation of today's cultural zeitgeist, reminding us that fashion and sports are more closely tethered than we think.
