Tommy Hilfiger Takes Shanghai for Fall 2018
Marking the label’s fifth season operating as a “See Now, Buy Now” brand, the Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2018 collection hit the fashion week runway as a stunning vision of red. Held in downtown Shanghai on the banks of the Bund, the brand’s latest collection is a conscious and self-referential look back towards the 90s and early 2000s—when necklines were higher, colors were brighter, and tracksuits were unequivocally 'in.'
The co-ed collection is comprised of over 100 unique looks, with pieces ranging from matching loungewear sets to patchwork flannels, to zip-up and pullover sweatshirts. Shirking away from the logomania trend—which has all but overwhelmed and oversaturated the fashion climate as of late—the collection is pared down when it comes to labeling, but is turned all the way up in regards to color. The range is overall anchored by the iconic Tommy Hilfiger red, with the colorful elements of each look tying together to create a cohesive color story.
Rather than attempting to re-configure the established conventions of athleisure silhouetting, the brand adds a subtle yet striking addition to the otherwise standard shapes of ready-to-wear in this FW18 collection. Design elements such as the oversized turtleneck motif—available in both zip-up and stretch styles—give the old-fashioned notion of modesty a re-up with extendable necklines that can stretch over the mouth. Signature Tommy Hilfiger trademarks such as bold striping and varsity lettering make an appearance as well, bringing the uniquely American flavor of fashion to the streets of Shanghai.
Recruiting a number of the brand’s hometown favorites out east, the noticeably diverse lineup of models featured some of fashion’s biggest faces, including Hailey Baldwin, Winnie Harlow, Lucky Blue Smith, and Joan Smalls just to name a few. With numerous Asian models making their mark on the runway alongside, the Tommy Hilfiger pays respect to its host country in a tactful and mindful way. With the fervor around fashion week reaching its peak in the coming weeks, the Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2018 show has set a relatively diverse and inclusive standard for the season—a precedent we can only hope will be met by future shows to come.
