The 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards made for a night of recognition and celebration of the LGBTQ+ community on Thursday Los Angeles. Hosted by Michael Urie, who many may know from the hit comedy-drama Ugly Betty, the event kicked off at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, drawing A-listers to the red carpet.
The ceremony's carpet proved that, especially in comparison to the standard gown, daring and vibrant fashions are unparalleled. From traditional elegance to theatrical extravagance, attendees delivered their best. Doechii dazzled in a Maison Margiela silhouette, with a measuring tape worn as a necklace. Jojo Siwa sported a new hairdo featuring the rainbow flag, a symbol of pride, diversity, and unity in the community. She also rocked a sparkly jacket, emblazoned with the words, "Trans rights are human rights," a statement that's particularly poignant during a time where the current U.S. administration is actively attempting to erase trans people by eliminating rights, prohibiting relevant language, and more.
Wicked's Cynthia Erivo (who wore Dior with an artful Lady bag from the French brand) received the special Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her support for the LGBTQ+ community and raising awareness of the issues impacting those within the community. Additional celebrity appearances included Lil Nas X (fresh off the release of an EP), Marren Morris, Lisa Ann Walter, and more.
Since 1990, this awards ceremony has honored inclusivity and fair representation of the LGBTQ+ community in media. LGBTQ+ icons and allies alike stepped out for the celebration, demonstrating camaraderie amid the tense socio-political climate. At a time when transgender rights are being brutally attacked, the ceremony was a hopeful reminder to viewers across the globe that in the face of adversity, the LGBTQ+ community will face any challenge head-on and fight for their rights as they've done time and time again. This community isn't going anywhere.
