The 11 Most Memorable Fashion Moments of 2022
A recap of the biggest fashion industry moves from the past year.
Iconic red carpet looks, memorable runways, end of eras—the fashion world threw everything our way in 2022. Through the ups and downs, the world has experienced—and continues to go through—fashion came through with industry-defining moments that have left their mark on fashion history. From Rihanna's bold maternity looks to the year of Julia Fox to Alessandro Michele's Gucci exit, L'OFFICIEL has rounded up the 11 most memorable fashion moments of 2022.
Rihanna's Maternity Fashion.
While Rihanna's pregnancy era seemed so long ago, this period of time was in fact in 2022. Her pregnancy announcement was already set to make headlines (of course it was, it's Rihanna), but her ability to become a maternity fashion trendsetter is what really kept her name in the news. She had already set a high bar after wearing a vintage Chanel puffer jacket and thousands of dollars worth of accessories in her pregnancy announcement outfit, but the endless jaw-dropping looks proved to the world why no one does it like her. Within a few months, the "Lift Me Up" singer completely rewrote the rules on maternity fashion, initiating an interesting conversation on what the future of maternity fashion will entail.
Matthieu Blazy's Debut Bottega Veneta Collection
Bottega Veneta officially entered its new era under Matthieu Blazy as the designer presented his debut collection during Milan Fashion Week for the Fall/Winter 2022 season. After Daniel Lee's abrupt exit as Bottega Veneta's Creative Director, all eyes were on Blazy as he took over the helm. Blazy's Bottega Veneta debut collection exceeded expectations as the collection focused on relaxed suiting whilst adding subtle contemporary twists to timeless silhouettes. Muted colors with pops of vibrancy were at the forefront of the collection—though there was not a hint Lee's Bottega Green in sight. It was an elegant affair that left fashion fans and insiders alike excited to see what Blazy continues to bring to the acclaimed brand.
Miu Miu Mini Skirts
If there's a single piece of clothing that was to be chosen as the face of 2022 fashion, it's the Miu Miu mini. Coinciding with the rampant comeback of Y2K fashion, the mini skirt first appeared in Miu Miu's Spring/Summer 2022 collection, though it picked up in popularity in early 2022. On every editorial, at every fashion event, and on every red carpet laid at least one celebrity dressed in the Miu Miu mini. Now the question remains: what big celebrity-approved thing will Miu Miu make next?
Barbiecore
Come on Barbie, let's go party—and party with Barbie 2022 most certainly did. The ultimate fashion influencer of 2022, Barbie no question claimed the year 2022 as hers for the taking. From Valentino Pink to the Barbiecore aesthetic to Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, the Color of the Year award goes to Barbie pink. It also helps that Y2K fashion remains at the forefront of fashion, blending well with the Barbie aesthetic. With the Barbie film arriving in theaters in summer 2023, we may see Barbiecore end up on this fashion list once again next year.
Raf Simons Shuts Down
Raf Simons's announcement of him closing his namesake fashion label caused shockwaves around the fashion industry. The brand had been around for 27 years, making its shut down the end of an era. For its final run, the label held its last show at Frieze London for the Spring/Summer 2023 season.
Alessandro Michele Leaves Gucci
From befriending Harry Styles to overseeing a Stanley Kubrick-inspired fashion campaign film, Alessandro Michele wasn't afraid to make Gucci his own. From the seven years that Michele served as creative director, the Italian designer brought new life to the brand with his arguably radical moments and reinvented Gucci's image into how it is seen today. Now all eyes are on Michele to see what his next big move is, and are also on Gucci to see what the future of the brand will look like outside of Michele's vision.
Daniel Lee Replaces Riccardo Tisci at Burberry
Before Riccardo Tisci officially announced his departure from Burberry, there were already rumors that his Spring/Summer 2023 collection would be his last at the British label. The speculation turned out to be true as shortly after he presented the collection during London Fashion Week, Tisci not only announced his departure but that Daniel Lee will be taking his position. It was only in 2020 that Lee abruptly left Bottega Veneta, leaving spectators curious about what Burberry will look like under Lee's creative direction. Lee's debut Burberry collection is set to take place during London Fashion Week for the Fall/Winter 2023 season.
Fendi Baguette's 25th Anniversary Show
Linda Evangelista is a supermodel for a reason. After 15 years since her last runway show, the supermodel made a triumphant return after closing out the Fendi Baguette 25th Anniversary Show. The fashion show was nothing short of a spectacle as the House honored its namesake bag with a massive venue, partnerships with Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co, and Porter, and well-known models such as Lila Moss, Anok Yai, Bella Hadid, and Precious Lee. Fendi also went all out with their front row seating including Kim Kardashian, Sarah Jessica Parker, Christy Turlington, Amber Valletta, Anna Cleveland, Grace Jones, Karlie Kloss, Kate Moss, Maude Apatow, Shalom Harlow, and Evan Mock.
Bella Hadid's Coperni Dress
While the democratization of fashion week has allowed the public to be a larger part of the bi-yearly event, it still takes a lot for a fashion show to break the internet. And yet, breaking the internet is exactly what Bella Hadid did at the Coperni Spring/Summer 2023 show. Hadid officially marked her spot in the fashion history books after having a white foamy substance spray painted onto her body live on the runway which quickly formed into a dress. The moment was instantly compared to the legendary Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 1999 show when Shalom Harlow spun around as robotic arms spray painted the white voluminous dress she was wearing.
Kim Kardashian in Marilyn Monroe's Dress
It doesn't matter what anybody says, the Met Gala is a fashion event—arguably the biggest of the year. This means that celebrities and public figures are challenged to wear something bigger and better than they wore in previous years. For the 2022 Met Gala, Kim Kardashian went above and beyond by showing up on the red carpet in Marilyn Monroe's iconic "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" dress. Of course, Kardashian's look brought up questions about how respectful wearing historical pieces is, a debate which was amplified after Kardashian revealed she lost 16 pounds in three weeks to fit into the dress. While the look was met with mixed reviews, nobody can deny that she broke the internet and became the face of the 2022 Met Gala.
Julia Fox
Julia Fox. That's it.
But seriously, there can't be a top fashion moments roundup without adding Fox to the list. The "Uncut Gems and things like that star" made headlines for numerous things—her temporary relationship with he who shall not be named, her viral memes, her TikToks, but it was her daring fashion looks that really catapulted her to a fashion muse. Whether she was wearing a DIY look (because "actually [she] made it [herself]") or was spotted in a designer outfit, Fox used every public opportunity to make a fashion statement, making her the fashion It girl of 2022.
