Camila Morrone started her Met Gala Monday with a facial and a long walk in Manhattan. By the early afternoon, her hair and makeup is complete, then it’s time to try on the full look. For this year’s Met Gala, the actor and model wore a white organza pleated off-the-shoulder blouse with a navy and black skirt feathered skirt from Chanel’s Fall/Winter Haute Couture 2021/22 collection. It’s a look Morrone has had her eye on for years, and it fit the theme “The Garden of Time” while not being too literal. Per Chanel, 1,210 hours and around 80,000 embroidered elements were required in the making of the look. Morrone topped off the ethereal but approachable goddess look with Chanel shoes, and Chanel High Jewelry: the Blé Infini ring in 18K white gold and diamonds and Motif Russe earrings in 18K white gold and diamonds.

Mere hours before stepping onto the green-lined Met Gala 2024 carpet, Morrone spoke to L’OFFICIEL about her French-inspired look, representing Chanel, getting ready, and what it’s really like going to the Met Gala.

L’OFFICIEL: How are you feeling about tonight?

Camila Morrone: I am minutes out of hair and makeup, which is always the exciting part because it's really fun to see the whole look come together. I've tried the dress on a few times and fit that to perfection, so now I'm just excited to put the dress on and see the final look all together, all pieced together. A lot of people work very hard to get this to where it is, so I'm excited to see the final result.

L’O:  What is your hair and makeup like? What look did you go for?

CM: We wanted to go with something French, something youthful and fresh, something a bit ethereal, a lot of blush. I did a bit of a winged eye. Then I kept my hair down and a bit more polished because the outfit is really the highlight here. It's all handmade. The skirt's completely handmade and feathers with little beads and crystals and couture and the buttons are all embellished on the shirt on the top as well. And there's just so many beautiful little details that I just wanted to keep the look just more simple so that the dress can really stand out.

L’O: You want to avoid it being too much look and let the clothes speak for themselves.

CM: When you're wearing Chanel couture in a piece like this, it does the work for you. The dress is the art and the work of art. So I just wanted to do hair and makeup that complemented it.

L’O: Your look from last year was one of my absolute favorites. Do you feel pressure to top yourself now that you've been a few times?

CM: No. Every year is different and I've never been to the Met with Chanel and I have such a great relationship with the house and it feels like coming full circle. This is our first time going together, and I'm getting to wear a really special look. I've had my eye on this look for a few months now and been trying to find the right event to wear it too. When we saw the theme for this year, we just thought it'd be a perfect pairing. I don't feel pressure. It's a fun night where everyone gets to try different things, and I feel just as excited about this look as anything I've worn in the past.

L’O: How would you say your look connects to the theme this year?

CM: The feathers do something quite airy and dreamlike and ethereal. Going very soft with the hair and makeup is a beautiful flow to the skirt when it moves and it takes up light in really beautiful ways.

L’O: What was your day like before getting glam? How did you prepare?

CM: Last night, I had two of my best girlfriends in my room till super late, and we just chit-chatted. It feels like a fancy summer camp the night before the Met when all your girlfriends were in the same hotel and it feels like a sleepover. Then this morning I had a really easy morning, I got a facial and went for a really long walk and started glam with my team. It's very calm here and quiet and we're having just a very not stressful Met morning, which is rare.

L’O: A facial and a long walk. Sounds amazing. What do you like to do when you get glam? Do you play music? Do you just like to chat?

CM: It depends on my mood. When we're in a time crunch, it's nicer to be in silence and everyone can flow and work really well together. But today we had some time, some cushion time, and so we're just chatting and snacking and I play music sometimes. Sometimes it's nice to have the room totally quiet. I think everyone has really busy Met Gala days and they're coming from other clients and running around. So I just want my glam room to be a peaceful place for everyone.

L’O: If you do play music, what kind of music would it be?

CM: I usually let someone else DJ because the pressure of DJing is just too much for me. I just let my hair and makeup artists take over.

L’O: How does Chanel fit into your personal style?

CM: I wear Chanel in every capacity. When I was 16 and got my first paycheck from modeling, I got myself a Chanel purse and I wore it to the ground and still have it, still wear it. They're pieces that... I have a few of them, but I've taken really good care of them and worn them through all different parts of my life, all over the world. And I don't know, I just feel the brand is so versatile. I feel like I can wear a couture gown tonight to the Met, and that's one aspect of Chanel. And then the other side is wearing a classic bag with a pair of jeans and a T-shirt and dressing it down. And it feels like there are pieces that I've just carried throughout the last 10 years, and I truly believe that I'll continue to incorporate them in my life-

L’O: What is it like inside the Met Gala? What do people not really know about what it's actually like?

CM: It’'s a lot of anticipation for the carpet. You see very big celebrities all waiting in line at the carpet, which is really fun to see. Everyone's looks before they all stand, before they all walk the big stairs. And I think it's a fun moment to catch up with people and to see everyone's looks. And then once you go inside, you're moved into a cocktail room. And then once you're seated for dinner, you're with your table mates. And I had really good table maces here that are all within the Chanel house, and I'm going to get to see Riley Keough for my show again. And one of my very good friends, Gracie Abrams and Penélope Cruz, and those are some of the girls that I'm really good friends with that are also friends with the house. And so, it's going to feel like a girl's night out. A very glamorous version of girls.

L’O: Have you had a celebrity encounter at the Met Gala that left you starstruck or just someone you were excited to meet there?

CM: Every single person I see at the Met Gala is a huge celebrity in their own right. So I think that... Oh, Billie Eilish did say hi to me on the carpet last year. I think there's a video of it somewhere on the internet. It definitely took my breath away. I definitely saw stars for a minute.

L’O: How do you unwind after an event like the Met Gala?

CM: I prepare to have room service bring a cheeseburger, a spaghetti bolognese, as many french fries as I can fit, and I take my heels off, wipe my makeup off, jump into bed, and just eat as much room service as I can with hope.

L’O: I love that. Are you going to any afters?

CM: I've got a couple girlfriends that we decided to be dates for the night, so we're going to pop along to some after-parties and just play it by ear. It's very hard to be in the same city as all of your very good friends. This is a really beautiful night because it brings a lot of people to New York City, and so we all just want to spend time together and see where the night takes us.
