Nicola Formichetti Is Stepping Down from Diesel
Nicola Formichetti, former artistic director of Diesel, took to Instagram this morning to announce that he would be leaving from Diesel after five years. Formichetti was Diesel founder Renzo Rosso’s protegee — a kindred spirit hired to revamp Diesel. Speculations arise on whether this leave is related to the brand’s loss in sales for the first time in 2016 and Formichetti’s increasingly successful program at Amazon Fashion Europe with Nicopanda.
The young designer joined Diesel in 2013 as its first artistic director. Formichetti had previously worked with Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, Lady Gaga, and Kim Kardashian before joining the denim and fashion brand. At his debut April 2014 show in Venice, he married his collection with an assortment of music, video and art accentuating his '90s-inspired leather dresses, biker jackets, and denim. Rosso said that Formichetti had added a guiding string to the brand that had become “boring.”
Amongst other projects at Diesel, Formichetti worked with edgy photographers and utilized archives to creative contemporary advertisements for the brand. His projects aimed at creating an online community for Diesel and increase their social media presence by using 23 influencers in their 2013 campaign video.
With Jonathan Saunders leaving DVF and Christopher Bailey out at Burberry, several creative director seats are freeing up and are open for grabs, begging the question: who's next?
