Letter from the Editor: We Love New York!
New York is many things, to many people. Defining what the city means to denizens who inhabit it is nothing short of Herculean. Everyone, of course, has their own stories about New York, certain memories tinged with nostalgia, recollections of bygone hot summer nights and neighborhoods long-since changed with the ebb and flow of time’s passing. And so, when we decided to celebrate New York for our second Digital Issue, we decided rather than attempt to define what “It” is, we would instead celebrate the individuals who have made New York a city that continues to delight, to inspire, to create. Call it a social history, the best of New York told through the lens of the people who live here.
Our cover pays homage to Andy Warhol, undoubtedly one of the city’s greatest storytellers. Photographed by Jeiroh, we brought together some of New York’s brightest lights for our very own Polaroid session.
Among our cover stars, you’ll see the likes of Harlem’s iconic designer of all things sartorial, Dapper Dan, alongside actress Hari Nef. Elsewhere, legendary Mugler muse and famed gatekeeper of New York nightlife, Miss Connie appears while the grand doyenne of nightlife, and recent subject of her own documentary, Susanne Bartsch makes her own appearance. Meanwhile, the chronicler of New York, Michael Musto, joins fellow Village Voice alum, Gary Indiana. Designer Todd Oldham, whose eponymous line introduced the mainstream with the vanguard of a generation, joins Emmy Award-winning designer and costume artist, Zaldy, along with multi-hyphenate designer, model, and DJ, Va$htie. Also, included are some of the faces making New York exciting today, among them Richie Shazam and Venus X. It’s an issue all about celebrating New York and the people we love. It’s a story that we hope we can continue to tell.
