Marc Jacobs' Most Erotic Runway Looks From the '90s

Marc Jacobs has been turning up the heat in women's fashion since he burst onto the scene with his eponymous label, and it's especially clear in his sheer clothes, short cuts, and satin bralettes.

Marc Jacobs's fashion career is a storied one from launching his own label in 1986 to when he was fired from Perry Ellis (after a commercially unsuccessful Spring/Summer 1993 collection), his time helming Louis Vuitton, and his more recent doll-like designs. His runway looks from the 1990s are particularly interesting to look back on, as they're brimming with evidence of his creativity and knowledge on how to get people abuzz, pre-internet, through innovative cuts, provocative fabrics, and supermodel casting.

Amid all his different styles and themes across the catwalks, Jacobs had a particular penchant for looks characterized by a subtle eroticism. Towing the line between the mature and fun or sultry and serious can be a thorny task when dressing, but Jacobs knows exactly which card to play. For example, his Spring/Summer 1995 Ready to Wear collection did include Mickey Mouse ears and leis, honing in on the kitsch of a costume party. It also included elegant and sexy looks, including daringly short hems and barely-there tops that are on-trend now, three decades later.

In the later half of the '90s, Marc Jacobs runways became more minimalistic, with tailored silhouettes that evoke more of the office-siren feel of Gisele Bündchen's character in The Devil Wears Prada. Glossy leather pencil skirts and shiny silver satins reigned, thus proving that some of the most alluring outfits one can wear are often the most simplistic. Across each theme, he offered his customers sartorial options to channel their own sensuality. The designer is a true visionary, pushing the boundaries of high fashion since the 1990s.

The 1990s may be fashion's favorite decade for inspiration, at least right now. Click through the gallery below to see Marc Jacobs' most memorable, erotic runway looks from his label in the '90s, including sheer dresses and racy leather ensembles.
