Meghan Markle's Nigerian Tour Style Echoes Her Royal Days

So far from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Nigeria Tour, Markle's style is a nod to her time as a royal.

As Duke and Duchess of Sussex enter day two of their trip to Nigeria, Meghan Markle's outfits in continue to stun. In addition to the neutral peach-toned maxi dress she wore on May 11 and the distinguished head-to-toe white pantsuit, her next sartorial choice for the trip featured a casual summery leaf print dress by Johanna Ortiz. She paired the botanical dress with a set of simple black sandals and a chic pair of sunglasses from Heidi Merrick.

Although Prince Harry and Markle are no longer working royals, some are quick to note that their visit has all the qualities of a royal engagement. Everything from the 72-hour whistlestop visit to promote the Invictus Games to the couple's choice in fashion is similar to what is expected from a royal tour. Communications professional Judi James spoke to the Daily Mail about the royal-like qualities of their visit. According to James, the Sussexs have "fallen back into the non-verbal habits and status signals of the earliest days of Meghan’s life as a royal here."

She also mentioned the clear line of separation between Meghan and Harry's roles during the tour. "While Meghan adopts some elegant but more "plus-one"-looking poses here at the start, either smiling or gazing adoringly at Harry as he makes his speech, it is Harry looking very much the lead here," said James. As we've seen in the past, the Duchess favors quiet luxury and leans towards a clean and streamlined method of dressing, evident in Meghan Markle's outfits in Nigeria.

With this wave of looks, there are subtle callbacks to her days as an official royal. The blush-colored Heidi Merrick dress worn on May 10 is called 'Windsor Dress, which may be a nod to her royal in-laws. Additionally, among the jewelry she wore with the look were a $62,000 Lorraine Schwartz pinky band and a $5,500 Ariel Gordon diamond tennis bracelet, which was reportedly a Valentine's Day gift from Prince Harry. Markle donned a Cartier watch similar to a piece her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, owned.

The Duchess also paid homage to Prince Harry's mother again later that day when she swapped out one piece of sentimental jewelry for another. Markle donned Princess Diana's famous cross necklace, a gift from her husband, as she visited Nigeria Unconquered, a charity organization. Alongside the necklace, the Duchess sported a white strapless St. Agni gown, a look she completed with an elegant updo—both fashionable and functional, as temperatures were reportedly sweltering on day two of Markle's Nigeria visit—and a minimal, but effortlessly put-together makeup style.

Her dress from Johanna Ortiz also bears a striking resemblance to the brown Martin Grant she wore during the Sussex royal tour of South Africa in September 2019. Her chic white suit from Altuzarra that she wore on Day 1 of the tour is also reminiscent of what would usually be worn by royal women during an international tour. Whether these nods and references to Markle's former life as a royal are intentional is unknown, but they strike up a lot of curiosity.
